  • A strong and overpowering farmyard stink dominated this for the first 15 minutes in glass. Brett? Just bottle stink? I don't mind this quality if it's subtle, but this was rather prominent. It did blow off, but not entirely. Maybe we should have decanted longer. The fruit on this bottle felt richer and more leathery. Very firmly in the modern Rioja style, though not the best bottle I've had.

  • Starts off with a dusty, truffled nose. With a few hours in the decanter, the fruit blossons. Ripe plum, toasted strawberry, noticeable garrigue and hints of pipe tobacco. Age is not in great evidence, but there is such layered complexity that emerges over the course of an evening. This is a wine full of energy and depth, but wears its many cloaks effortlessly. Some of the most gorgeous tannins I've had in a wine. Many years left. Stunning.

  • Beauty in a glass. Soft ripe plum, cherry, black raspberry, strawberry confit, vanilla, tobacco, garrigue, coffee. Silky smooth, but plenty of structure and depth. The finish is wondrous and eternal. There is a long life ahead of these bottles that will only improve for at least the next five years.
