Lunch at Gramercy Tavern - Jon's bottle. This wine never ceases to amaze people. The color is that of strong home-brewed iced tea, almost black. The nose gives off some mustiness and cork, but that burns off as the wine opens to reveal more burnt sugar and molasses. The palate is caramel, molasses, chocolate and honey without the glycerin burn of some dessert wines. Paired great with all kinds of cheese, even blue cheese to our surprise.
The Big "Four-O": 40+ Wines for 40 Years: This wine amazes me every time. It is like an old Sauternes, except it was made in America and cost me $34/btl a few years ago. Lots of caramel, molasses, a little chocolate, just wonderful.
