Birthyear wine for our friend Mike. Opened about 3h. slow oxed, before drinking with a lovely dinner of braised lamb shanks. The cork was in excellent shape, clean at the top and saturated ~1/2 way. Rather port-like on the nose, with mocha and asian spice notes. Surprisingly rich and fruity for a wine this age, with a minty/eucalyptus note that became more pronounced with air. The oldest CA cab I've tried to date, and my first from the '60s. The previous evening we had a '74 Mondavi pinot noir, which was also excellent. Collectively, these two wines did a lot to reaffirm my belief that the '60s and '70s were the golden age for CA wine.

This is fifty years old? It's still full of rich, intense, powerful chocolately black fruit. There's some minty/cedar/gravelly/ complexity, but even at 50 the intensity of the fruit is impressive. This must have been a monster in its youth. A wonderful bottle.

Served double blind to my friends, they all guessed 2001/2002. I would have picked 1997. This was surprisingly young, fresh, vibrant and packed with sweet, ripe, black and blue fruits with licorice accents. full bodied and rich, this is a great example of aged California Cabernet.

Excellent wine. Slightly thin, stewed fruits in the mid palate. Long finish. Probably getting near the end of its run but still drinking well.
