Mature wines at Marco's (Milford, CT): Wow! Such amazing freshness, vibrancy and energy here; layers of caramel, figs, butterscotch, baking spices and higher toned citrus zest flavours in a package that manages to show tremendous sweetness, freshness and elegance at the same time. There's a powerful acid spine beneath that cuts through everything, and a finish that just keeps lingering. Monumental.

A Taste of History: The Leacock Family Madeiras (revisited) (The J.P. Morgan Mansion, NYC): Dark color, dark flavors; lots of torrefaction. This is a deep, deep, deep wine; loads of bass notes: coffee, caramel, and treacle, but these heavy flavors are lifted and counter balanced by citrus peel and bright acidity. Muscular, yet it dances delicately on the palate; this was like a bodybuilder performing a ballet (a lengthy ballet). Waves of flavors tenaciously clung to the palate. Just as in the San Francisco tasting, this performed marvelously and was in a neck-and-neck battle for wine of the night honors. Gorgeous!

A Taste of History: The Leacock Family Madeiras (Hotel Monaco, San Francisco, CA): A famous, yet ridiculously rare wine. Produced on the estate of Joseph Phelps, an early British shipper. One sip of this and I declared it the wine of the tasting for me. Dark caramel in color, root beer, treacle, figs. Expands slowly on the palate, where it mercilessly coats anything that happens to get in its way. Like "The Blob", resistance is futile. One of those wines where you can taste it minutes later by licking between your gums and lips. Uncanny combination of richness and nervous tension. Profound length... profound wine.

(Lomelino Madeira Quinta da Paz) Medium orangish brown color with ruby lights and clear meniscus; rich orange, baked orange, tart raspberry and tart red fruit nose; soft, honeyed, apricot, raspberry, berry and cherry palate; long finish (WOTT or 2nd for many) [The wine was produced on the estate of Joseph Phelps, an early British shipper, and came into the possession of the Leacocks and Blandys when Lomelino joined the Madeira Wine Association.]
