This was ready to drink, but by no means over the hill. No detailed notes on this one, but it was impressive. Not sure, however, that I’d pay the Gaja premium for this wine.

Smoked prune and fig gave way to black cherry, port with hints of chocolate, as nose unwound in the glass! Fine silty tannins, only added to the staying power of the ripe yet firm tannins. Finish of earthy licorice. Tasted three times over 5 years and showing little sign of fading, just takes longer to open up, after balsamic volatility blows off in decanter! Really solid effort for first wine from Gaja, in this region, from 4 year old vines in a warm vintage.

Tasted after 1995 Cos d'Estournel. More generous on the nose, lovely fruit, liquorice, fennel seeds. Drinking really well, soft tannins, good acidity, ripe fruit. Harmonious and long. Drink or keep.

Ca' Marcanda dinner: Again - animals, milk, dried soft fruits and smoke, nettle and smoked meat. Excellent balance and maturity at this point.
