  • Meritage blend blind tasting with buddies, wine #7. Always a pleasure to taste Gaja. This vintage, followed by ‘13 were the last Merlot based with composition of 50% Merlot, 40% CS & 10% CF. Since ‘15 Merlot was downsized leaving a fixed composition of 80% CS & 20% CF. Delicate aroma of cherries, blackberries, cold cuts, earth, toasted oak, tobacco and cassis hints. Medium+ bodied subtle, elegant and restrained expression with harmoniously silky profile, well structured sandy tannins.

  • Still found this VERY easy to drink with dinner. May be closed a bit at the moment though. Very dark in the glass, nose a touch muted with black tea and hint of menthol. In the mouth, more in the tea range but then black currant behind it. Tannins quite mellow, do come out on the finish as do the acids.

  • Best Bottle Monday with Friends (Carlton, Zurich): This wine was not open for business. The nose was uneven with alcohol being a bit too dominant and only medium intensity of earth/barnyard, red fruit notes. On the palate the same picture: red fruit, some chocolate and hints of earth and cedar aromas. Not very well balance with some excess acidity and alcohol. Tannins are ripe and smooth, flavor intensity and complexity is ok. Finish too. This just seems to need more time. If you open a bottle today, I would give it a very long decant (5+ hours). I guess, this has the potential to become a good wine, but not something very good or extraordinary.

  • Monday Bouteille (Carlton Restaurant, Zurich): No decant. Initially still closed, but opened up after 20mins or so. No doubt still very young, but nevertheless showed a leathery, oaky side next to the fresh, bright and a even a bit dark fruit although the red, raspberry notes become more dominant over time. Also clear floral (roses, violets) and herbal (mint, maybe lavender) components. Give it another 3 years or so of bottle age. Over 1h in the glass the olfactory sensation went from ~90 to 94-95 and ended back at around 92.

  • Lunch at Braci (Braci, Boat Quay): Very pleasant, without being quite outstanding. The nose was a nice mix of dried and fresh berries with a touch of dried earth, herb and spice. Bordeaux with an Italian twist. The palate had a nice juiciness to it, with bright acidity and a thin layer of powdery tannins framing pleasant flavours of juicy cherries and raspberries. Decent finish too, with a little lick of spice trailing away on the midpalare. Drinking well young, with some upside over the next 5-10 years, this was a nice wine.
