Tete de Cuvee Rose Tasting (Brookhaven, GA): Waxy, round nose, more orange in color, high acid, maybe the weakest in the lineup but tough competition; this has to be the La Grande Dame.

A really immaculate wine that surprised me, as I generally found the regular Grand Dame brut to be a letdown for me. Beautiful nose of peaches and cream, strawberry pie, graham crust, and berry compote. Pronounced palate of ripe red fruit, strawberries, framboise, red plums, lifted and added complexity from the MLF and autolysis notes of buttery pie crust, shortbread, and peach/berry cobbler.
Fine mousse, med/+ acid, med/- body, no heat on the long complex finish. Dry on the finish, but a fruity sweetness balances the palate without diluting the experience. This really outstanding and showing so well right now. Has potential to age further, but really scrumptious tonight. I would definitely look to grab more bottles in the future.

Finally an 08 from a big producer that’s ready to drink! Drinking much better than last year — last year it was mysterious and complex and took a long time to open, and this year big and vibrant out of the gate. Ironically I scored it lower than I did last year, which I think is because last year I had to work so hard to find the complex nuances (which were definitely there) and this year it’s all fruit fruit fruit (cherries and strawberries) vanilla toast delicious and so the nuances are somewhat obscured. Analogies about playing hard to get certainly apply. Anyway: delicious and drinking well now (finally).

The Grand Finale: The Last Plum Tasting & Wine Sale (Chicago, IL): Ripe and quite high in dosage, this is drinks better than my last experience with the regular Grande Dame. The 2008 acidity is there, and there are some sweet red fruit notes here. A good, if somewhat unimpressive champagne, but then I saw the price tag and guffawed.

not blind, at winery from Magnum
I prefer let's say DP Rose 2008 because this one is less long and a bit sweeter. 94
