  • Aerate to decanter 1 hour. So, I had a bottle in September, not a great showing. Then I had another bottle a month later, much improved. Four months after the last bottle, this is positively singing and at peak right now. Medium ruby core, bricks toward the rim. If I was double blinded on this, I'd have guessed abv% at 14, not a tenth more. Opens with funk, but quickly moves to red currant, spice, bramble, a touch of vanilla and red licorice. Medium+ body with cool acidity, and grippy, fine-grained tannins. Some black tea and milk chocolate present with the last glass. Positively out-shined the food tonight, to the point that I pushed the food away and vastly preferred the wine for no other reason than it had better quality ingredients. This has structure for mid-term cellaring, but is quite enjoyable right now, as well. Drink thru 2016, 15,9% abv, score: B+/A-

  • PnP. This was nothing like the last bottle - much fresher, more balanced and well composed. Enjoyably spicy with strawberry jam, red floral and a hint of earth. My only nit is that it was a little more ripe and full than I prefer, but it made a very strong showing with a pineapple/sausage/fennel pizza. The heat was well integrated. Drink thru 2014, 15,9% abv, score: B

  • PnP at cellar temperature (recommended). Medium brick-red core with ageing. This is ready to go, no decant, just jump in. Like all the Moshin wines, this is very food friendly, notwithstanding its port-like qualities, read on...

Begins with aromas of prune, wispy raspberry and cherry, some raw steak, cigar butt, clove, pie crust and dusty leather. Flavors are predominantly port-like, with fig, prune danish, tart raspberry and red berry jam. Simple and to the point, but impresses with cool acids and unexpected complexity. Finishes with brown sugar, sawdust and ganache liqueur. I had the 2000 bottling from this vineyard not too long ago, so I've come to expect fun and greatness at the same time. Drink thru 2014, 15,9% abv.

  • Hot, raisin-y and way on the ripe side of the spectrum. Better with a little cellar chill.
