  • 1984 Napa Cabs/Blends (Mpls, MN): Very dark red color. PNP, decanted and drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Nose is dominated by stewed fruit, raisin, dry earth. The palate has some redeeming qualities though; tart, red berries, still reasonably balanced, integrated tannins, shorter-medium finish. This was drinkable and still of interest on the palate in small quantities, but the nose was a mess. Faded. Weakest of the group.

  • Garnet red; tobacco, earthy, leather nose, sl dry but red currents, dried tart cherry flavors; very smooth, not watery or weak in the mid palate; nice med long finish- not a wine for Christmas dinner but a fine mature red table wine for weeknights at home. Not a blockbuster but very well made and still alive food friendly wine.

  • Had no real expectations of greatness, but this really wasn't bad at all. But then neither was it great. Color was mostly dark ruby with perhaps only a hint of browning. Nose and palate tended towards tarter fruit like cranberry. Tannins resolved of course, but this needed a hint of something more, either in complexity or richness. Still, not bad at all for 25 year old Napa cab that was never considered all that great in its youth

  • I pulled two 1984 cabs out to celebrate Leap Day...the Inglenook Reunion and the Phelps Eisele. Both have been written up as "over the hill". Like with many older cabs I expected that there would be little or no time needed for airing the wines. Boy, was I wrong. We got to the Reunion about an hour after it was opened and it tasted...over the hill. There was a short mid-palate taste of aged cab that was excellent, but it rapidly tailed off. During the next three hours the wine kept opening up and showing different looks. By the end of the bottle the concentrated flavors of the wine were coming out...a beautiful, seamless and smooth cab taste with vanilla and hazelnut highlights. The aroma throughout was mostly of glycerin...nothing to write home about. I'm sorry it was my last bottle of this great cab. Be patient with this wine!!!

  • Barbecue with friends and a humble winemaker (Somewhere Downtown!): Arrrgh. I wanted this one to show so much better than it did. The colour is still deep in colour without showing any age. The aromatics are nicely dense, concentrated black currant, smoke, dried fig, and plainly intense. Builds you up for a very disappointing palate. Thin and insipid. That's it. Nothing whatsoever happening. What an upset.
UPDATE: After reading RP's review about 13 years ago, I shouldn't have been so anxious to try this thing. It was interesting to try this, but after the review, I'm not surprised by the showing. Oh well :(
