Quite youthful still; good red cherry fruit, fairly secondary notes of savory yet rich spice and fruit character, earthy. Nice balance with tons of life left.

An old-school Volnay, a youthful, saturated ruby-black in hue, this '93 Champans opens up to reveal a complex bouquet of cassis, red plum, dried ceps, forest floor and roast squab. On the palate the wine is concentrated and still firm at the core, with a taut chassis of fine tannin and bright acidity. This ex-domaine bottle was evolving slowly, and I'd have loved to decant it, as it really began to blossom with the last glass.

(Vaucluse, NYC). Very different than the first bottle we had here--autumnal in mood. Dark garnet. A whiff of dark fruit followed by mushroom and earth. Good lift and acidity. Fascinating study of the evolution of two well stored sister bottles. After having it with their amazing "duck a l'orange" last time, we had to do it again. A great pairing .

Ruby colored. This led with explosive sour cherry and floral aromas and followed with earth and sous bois. Soft tannins, low alcohol, brisk acidity. A bottle like this would make a Burgundy slave out of anyone--and I am already one.

A lovely surprise! True that the wine is on the "rustic" side of things which doesn't necessarily scream premier cru volnay, but I've been consistently happy with 1993 Cote de Beaune reds. Continued to evolve and open up over two hours.
