  • Final bottle from a case+, and first bottle in 20+ months. The decline here seems to be on an accelerating path. Aromatically this remains inviting with sous bois, potpourri, red berries, a whiff of smoked cherry wood, and an old sweater. On the palate this retains an energetic level of acidity on the attack, though the wine is unbalanced in the mid palate as the acidity overwhelms the fruit and tannin that remain. The predominant mid palate experience is a soured combination of cherry and cranberry followed by a smoky dryness before turning into a pasty chalk note on the brief finish.

Overall, this wine provided drinking pleasure over the years. From my tastings over an extended period, this good quality wine demonstrates that even in a prodigious year, the wines of the Beaune are best enjoyed in their relative youth (7-12 years) when compared to the wines from the Nuits in excellent vintages.

Like me, the best days for this wine are behind it IMHO. Drink up.

  • First bottle in almost 5 years (4/2016). Pnp. Cloudy in the glass with orange bricking prominent. Aromatically took some coaxing to draw out some sous bois, green pepper, and red currant. On the palate the acidity remains vibrant thrusting forward a tart cranberry note that overpowers the faintly present cherry. Finish was uninspiring, and overall this particular bottle makes me long for the glory this wine demonstrated 5 years ago.

Three bottles remain out of 18 purchased, and I plan to revisit another bottle to see if this was an aberration. If I find a similar experience the remaining consumption will be completed before 2023.

The recommendation is to check in and pull a cork if you have this.

  • 2nd bottle consumed. The First was around 18 months ago. That wine seemed jammy and more typical to something from Santa ynez. Seems this has finally shed its baby fat. This is a large scale wind no doubt for burgundy. A bit unusual. However it's quite refined with a flavor profile much more similar to a gevrey with a raw meat flavor profile. Bright tart sour cherries. Have one more bottle of this and I'll probably drink it in the next year.

Lastly, consumed over the course of a week through a coravin. Great every day.

  • This is my third 2005 1er this month. A pattern is starting to develop: the 2005's are living up to the hype. This wine is building nicely since my last bottle about 16 months ago. Pnp.

Aroma - This really opened up nicely from the start with sous bois, ripe strawberries, raspberry, and mushrooms.

Palate - This is very polished and silky on the palate. The acidity on this picks up a steady acceleration as the spices, licorice, raspberry, and cherry notes unfold in layers. Polished tannins provide backbone and structure without any bruising on the mouthfeel. This finishes with a fine length of spice and acidity that really stretches out. A lovely wine 16 months ago that is developing into a wine with more potential ahead.

Drink or hold. Either choice should be rewarded.
