Pinot Noir - NZ & Burgundy (Newmarket, Auckland): medium ruby, slight brick rim, showing some ages. salty savoury notes dominating, earthy, wet forest floor. a sweet fruity core with rose perfume emerged after half hour breathing in glass. soft texture, silky tannins, solid acidity, all smooth and balanced. just a little over the peak.
It's obviously an old Burgundy with good quality, easy to identify. WS 94, JCL 93
Ap 5/5, Ar 12/15, Palate 17/20, Overall 4+4/10 Total 92/100

This was very pretty tonight with an expressive nose of red and perhaps some blue fruit, subtle, earthy sous notes, Asian spice undertones and perhaps some hints of nutmeg. There might also be some floral notes lurking in the background. All of these components carry through to the rich, round, penetrating palate. This wine is in a good place tonight and starting to show abit of bricking at the rim. There’s no need to hurry here, but to my tastes, there’s also no need to wait.

Dinner at Yang Ming (Yang Ming, Ubi): Quite unexpectedly, another blind Taupenot-Merme Charmes showed up at our table. This one was very good indeed - much better in fact than what I expected when I tried in in barrel at the domaine years ago. This had such a pretty nose, with perfumed wafts of red cherries and blueberries, a touch of damp earth, and then drifts of spice and sweet roses. Very attractive. The palate was showing really well as well - very pure and transparent, with a lovely silky structure to it, this unfolded in the mouth in fresh, juicy notes of red cherries and darker blueberries, spice and again that charming touch of roses towards the finish. There was decent depth to it - not a blockbuster, but certainly with a nice bit of Grand Cru intensity and length. Exactly what you would want from a 2007 in other words. Yummy stuff - I really enjoyed this. It was drinking really well now too.

Showing some brown and not as luscious as 06 or as deep which I have been drinking a bit recently so I had to mark it down from prior
