Retail $50. I have never met Peter Cargasacchi, although I had hoped for a meeting for some time. I have only had a few of his eponymous wines, but I have had several Pinots from his vineyard(s). And they have all been gorgeous. I am not sure to what extent he is still involved in the wine business; I am pretty sure he is no linger *producing* wine, but is he still growing grapes? I have no idea, but I would love to find out. He is at the top of SRH figures that I would like to meet. Peter, Brian (x2), Rick, and many more on my list. But Peter is at the top. The wine? Fantastic. Really dark for a Pinot, more Syrah or Cabernet-like in color, with really dark fruit aromas: blackberry, plum, even cassis. Again, not very Pinot-esque. Then there was the spice and herbs: cardamom, cumin, thyme, basil Again, very un-Pinot. The palate is equally intriguing and compelling. Dark fruit, for sure, but there is also the tartness, spice, and a hole lot of verve. This might be a step below the last bottle I opened, but only a half-step--this is fantastic.
Retail $50(?). It has been a bit since I opened a bottle of this and since it had been a tough week I needed a solid, even fantastic Pinot. This qualifies. Dark in the glass with surprisingly great fruit (blackberry, dark cherry), spice (clove, dark pepper), and some dark earth. Holy cow. Whoa. The palate is pretty close to off the charts with, again, surprising fruit, an incredibly rich mouthfeel, more than a modicum of spice, wonderful tartness, and supple, integrated tannins. Yowza. Really fantastic.
Another month or so further on, and not surprisingly, is still stellar. Fairly dark and brooding with eucalyptus, pine and dark berry fruit arranged in a alluring amalgamation in the glass. The wine is just as fabulous on the palate with rich, dark fruit, plenty of earth, and hints of tannin on the finish. Just short of a whoa. thedrunkencyclist.com

I have never met Peter Cargassachi, but I have met many people that do know him and it sounds like he is a pretty solid dude. I have not had a ton of his wines, either, but those that I have tried have been stellar. I am not sure if his Cargassachi Vineyard is considered an American Grand Cru Vineyard like Clos Pepe or Bien Nacido, but it should be--the wines produced from the site are truly stellar, and this is no exception: dark for a Pinot with dark cherry, clove, eucalyptus, and earth on the nose. On the palate, still plenty of fruit, but also great depth and balance--the tannins are still present, but nearly integrated, on the finish. Wow, this is good. thedrunkencyclist.com

Flinty black cherry on the nose, with notes of wet rock and underbrush. Pleasing. Pure black cherry flavors mingle with notes of cranberry, orange peel and brown spice. Nicely acidic. Very good.
