  • Birthday Lunch at Caprice (Private Room, Caprice Restaurant, Four Seasons Hotel, Two IFC, Hong Kong): A 2012 "Drouhin Family Late Release" bottle. Deep yellow plum colour but still brightly jeweled. Nose is lovely... very rounded and complete....yellow buttercups, yellow plums, fresh saffron, lots of yellow. Palate is nice acidic cut, fresh and alive, WOW.... a real Bang! inside the head even before the swallow. Crunchie bar without the sweetness. Burnt almond. Very rich yellow fruit at the fore with well-toned oak. Very head-expanding. Burnt butter. An awesome wave of a wine across multiple Michelin *** dishes at Caprice in Hong Kong. Probably best towards the end with the 40-month Comte cheese. Faded after 3 hours.

  • Special recent release from the family cellar, labelled "Collection Privee de la Famille Drouhin, Sortie de cave en Juin 2012". Deep burnished copper-gold urine colour but still very bright. Nose is toned down and extremely rounded in a light segue of slightly burned butter and very rounded pebble-like boiled caramel sweets from Cornish beach holidays in my childhood. Palate is beautifully rounded light citric acidity, with some pleasant slight oxidisation, very light butterscotch, mouthwatering....so light. There is a resonance but you could equally call it 'dilute' or 'angelic'. As it warmed up, a more Cognac-style power emerged whilst keeping its lightness and high-altitude resonance on the finish. Overall, very muted compared to the previous bottle I drank in April 2013 from the same limited release - except my tasting notes are remarkably similar. A very 'chacun a son gout' type of wine. I think we polished off this bottle too quickly to properly contemplate it.

  • Shane's Last Night Dinner (Pok Fu Lam, Hong Kong): One of several bottles acquired as a 2012 Library release direct from the Chateau. Rich buttery shiny gold colour. Looks very alive. Reticent but multi-layered nose of oyster shells, melted butter ... very subtle but really mesmerizing. Palate is a beautiful and subtle remniscence of expensive butterscotch boiled sweets at Christmas in my childhood. Huge resonance in the head and great length. Stunning resonance. Silence creating. All power and no weight. Absolutely gorgeous.
