Oregon Pinots with the Wine Thursday group at WWS (Willamette Wine Storage - Portland, OR): Served blind: The nose on this one was weird to me at first, it smelled like a combination of wet dish sponge, dried mushrooms and over-ripe cherries. The palate was extremely pleasing, rich flavors that evolve into tart flavors through the palate, nice velvety feel, even some hints of grapefruit spike up on the finish. Nice dusty finish. This wine was showing it all tonight, complexity, age, evolution. A balanced and delicious effort. I guessed 1999, we were all surprised when the bags came off. Well done Stag Hollow! Most people's WOTN.

Oregon Pinot Noir 1997-2005 (Willamette Wine Storage - Portland, OR): The nose is dark and complex showing evergreen scents, subdued blackberries, roast beef, and a hint of dust. It's very soft on contact with great evolution across the palate. Some very nice apple flavors show early along with light blackberries. The acidity slowly builds and begins to dry and make the mouth water on the finish. Everything plays for a long time on the palate. The tannins build slooooowly and are only noticeable very late when they settle nicely across the tongue. Some aged character shows through at times, and later in the night, some chocolate appeared as well. This is a wine to sip and savor little by little. Lovely. This was my wine of the night.

1997-2005 Oregon Pinot Noir (Willamette Wine Storage): MUCH more interesting and complex on the nose here... rich, herbaceous smelling, very charismatic, showing beautiful berries, forest floor, dried fruits (figs), and cracked pepper. YUM! Soft and integrated palate, showing pleasing earthy flavors, spice, and clove. Spicy with nice acid not detected elsewhere, coupled with more pleasing earth tones. WOTN.

Weekend Before Thanksgiving in the Willamette Valley, Oregon (Oregon): I love this nose! Soft blackberries and baked peaches take over and are all wrapped with a hint of caramel. Lovely! On the palate, the baked peaches come through as if drenched in reduced blackberry juice. The dark fruit flavors run on and on. The structure is gentle, but still fully intact, and some port flavors show through as well. The structure is nice and gentle, and the dark fruits appear as the finish trails off as well. Gorgeous.
