  • This is one of Tuscany’s great wines, a reputation that it had earned by the time of the Renaissance. Now, Dante in his Inferno mentions Vernaccia as a great wine for pickling eels (as an example of the Pope’s gluttony none the less!), but we promise you that it is much better as a table wine. Citrus, herbs and roasted nuts on the nose with a clean mineral finish, it is ideally suited to white meats, fish or other seafood (but avoid the eels), creamy risotto and of course, Tuscan soups. It has a bit of oak treatment and will show its true colours (and flavours) if you open it an hour or so before serving. And, it seems almost traditional to finish reviews of Vernaccia di San Gimignano with either “the wine will go quickly” or “you may want a second bottle”.
