A small gathering at Bryan's (Bryan's place): I was really impressed when I had it ten years ago. Beautiful clear color. Expressive nose displaying sweet and warm red fruit, candied strawberry and cherry, a hint of dry cherry, strong licorice and cinnamon, caramel, rose, grilled porcini and iron mineral. With air, iron becomes very strong. Perfectly mature palate, very finely layered sweet red fruit, round and sweet, perfect amount of acidity, strong iron mineral, still noticeable tannins and a long candied red fruit driven finish with iron at the end. With air, it becomes more complex. The iron expression reminds me the 78 Giacosa Collina Rionda. The perfect match for tajarin wtih copious white truffle. Excellent showing.

What an incredible bottle! This was the Valentino bottling and I agree with DCWines 2011 notes, though ten years did not resolve all the tannins and acids. Still has the dried cherry/jammy strawberry qualities and could go another 6-8 years comfortably. Brick color with dark amber rim. Nose also presented a wealth of complexity with anise, dried rose petals, roasted mushrooms, earth. The palate and finish added some iron to this wines depth. Amazingly fresh for a 43 year old! Should have decanted 4 hours prior to drinking.

Wow, this was magnificent. Double decanted a few hours before dinner and it immediately had a lovely floral raspberry perfume. With dinner the fruit just kept getting sweeter and more intense, eventually settling into a currant and strawberry profile. Soaring aromatics of anise, roses, mint, just glorious. Palate had enough tannin to frame everything and delicious acidity that added detail and energy. This just seemed to gain over the course of dinner.

Blind tasting of a few Barolo wines with some friends. Brownish garnet-red. Balsamic notes with cherry, tobacco, old leather, again some dried fruits, Vieille Prune, orange blossom honey and some earthiness. A cool stylistics with still lively acid, already resolved tannins and liminal 14 above. The palate still offered sweetish fruits, Vieille Prune and candied orange zest. Long-lasting aftertaste. Great balance.
Langer Abgang. Tolle Balance.
