Ye gods, this is amazing, nothing like previous Fourrier 1999s - this was dense, earthy, deep, really deep, fungal and with layer upon layer. Sensational.

More evolved compared to Faiveley's NSG Clos de la Maréchale tasted alongside. Slightly barnyardy on the nose, notes of spices, earth, soft red fruit. Nice structure on the palate, great tannic bite, good acidity and fruit, well balanced. Medium length, a little fading towards the finish. 90-92

Gevrey-Chambertin and Game (Nicolas Restaurant, Teck Lim Street, Singapore): A really lovely wine – this was classic Gevrey tempered with Fourrier’s elegance. It had a very nice nose, with sweet scents of sappy red cherries and a nice floral perfume edged with funkier tones of wet-aged meat, sous bois and a little bit of minerality. Lovely. The palate was remarkably light-footed and elegant for a 1999; certainly lighter and more graceful than the 1999 Fourrier Combes Aux Moines that we had alongside for example, with lovely pure tones of red cherries flecked by touches of earth and mineral, all showing a lovely precision, cut and elegance, partly lent to it by the surprising amount of bright acidity that this had. There was still a nice grip of fine tannins towards the long finish, but this did not seem to have the sheer muscle of a 1999 Gevrey-Chambertin, instead bearing a grace that belies the vintage. Not a blockbuster, but a very nice wine, starting to drink well now, with still some upside over the next few years.

Fair to above average on the overall. Aromatics knock it down a bit -- muted to unpleasant there. Palate picks it up a bit -- nice red fruit and some earthiness. No rush to drink, but no upside detected, either....

Filippo's Fourrier @ Trompette (La Trompette, London): Blind. Dusty, mellow. A little pinched and less generous on the palate. Opens up well though. ***1/2
