  • "Barely Legal" Lunch (Asia Grand, Odeon Towers): A pretty nice bottle, but still rather tight and unyielding despite sitting in the decanter for an hour or so. It did have a beautiful nose though - very earthy, dusty, with dried rose petals scattered over some deeper soil aromas, and then curls of cigarette smoke, and high-toned scents of dark cherry and berry seasoned with a touch of Italian herbs. A very Italian nose. I should have guessed Piedmont with that, but the palate somehow led me to Sangiovese instead. It was very smoky, ashy, but had a rich, muscular dark fruited core with plenty of power, though perhaps lacking some elegance in spite of the bright orangey acidity that ran the spine of the wine. A weightlifter or bodybuilder of a wine I thought - perhaps a Brunello crafted in a slightly more rustic fashion. Certainly not what you would expect from a 33 year-old Barberesco. It did finish very nicely though, with little touches of dried earth and mineral, spice and more herbs, along with the another waft of smoky accents. While this drank very well with our food, especially with a nice Peking Duck, it really does need a lot more time. At the moment, it comes across as rather tight and brawny. One does wonder how long it will take to come around though.

  • V unique nose with some dusty notes. Some black tea and some heat at the end. A little odd. Palate has some aged cherries. More masculine style. This was confusing. It came across as a Spanish Rioja, chianti Sangiovese and maybe a Rhone like syrah blend. Given an unfamiliarity I had thought it might be a Lebanese or Greek wine. Good wine that lasted it's age but not exactly how I would envision a barbersco.
