2007 Saxon Brown Syrah Horizontal (Woodbury, MN): Bottle opened 2 hrs before dinner. Horizontal tasting with the Parmelee-Hill Camp Block and Flora Ranch bottlings. Initially the most reticent of the three on the nose, with nothing more than cedar coming through. Rich extraction and a velvety mouthfeel. Good acid and slightly higher toned fruits. As the night progressed, this one had the best balance between elegance and power. Lengthy finish.
Enjoyed in a Riedel Vinum Syrah glass at 65°F.

Deep dark ruby. Blueberry, lots of spice, and leather nose. Medium bodied, plums, sage, black cherries, black olives, well integrated dusty tannins, tobacco, dark chocolate, a bit of heat, and a long finish. Excellent, especially on day 2.

Drank this over two days. Day 1 on opening came across as a lighter style, with a decent nose and a restrained palate. After an hour or two it appeared to pick up weight and added a bit more berry to the taste. Finish dominated by the tannins. Day 2 it broke out into a smooth, rich syrah with a lingering finish, the tannins beating a full retreat. Not a ton of gamy/leather, more fruit driven, but it compels to to pour another glass.

Thick and juicy...came alive after a 1-2hr decant.

I liked it, I like it a lot. Saxon-Brown syrah is consistently very good to excellent. Rich and smooth. Needs decanting for sediment.
