I’ve had some good Corton rouge over the years, but I’m not sure about great. However, the nose on this 2001 Bruno Clavelier Corton Le Rognet was pretty great, and was the best thing I’ve smelled since the 99’ Bachelet Charmes-Chambertin back in February. While it wasn’t as nuanced as the Bachelet, it was a little more giving and explosive. Higher octane and somewhat brash with hints of alcohol, but not over the top or flagrant, as the bold dark red fruit, earthy accents, and spice character had it well saturated.
On the subject of great aromatics, I’ve found that it rarely leads to greatness on the palate. That was the case again here, with the flavors repeating on the palate for the most part, and the wine still holding plenty well with good depth, freshness and mellowing structure. Just without the explosiveness of the nose. Altogether very even and very good, we were happy to drink it as well. In its peak window with plenty of room to run.

Has tightened up a bit since my last bottle but is still very pure and direct with crisp fruits that play on a bed of geological matter. It sweetens up in the glass and has good depth and a slight meaty edge to the flavour profile. The finish is very chewy and very Corton. Needs another decade plus in the cellar.

One of the most wonderfully pure, red Burgs one could hope for, full of rocky detail and expressive Pinot traits. It is fine and balanced yet with some Corton muscle lurking just below the surface. It finishes with a crisp, cranberry fruit snap.

Beautiful balance with cherry fruit, earthy elements, and bright acidity. Years of life, but quite nice now.
