It's so refreshing to have a chance to drink a wine like this Home Vineyard Clos Saron. I consider myself quite the privileged little oenophile tonight. Back when I was younger and time was freer, I used to make the 90-min. driver to Oregon House to help Gideon in the vineyard, or harvest, or a few times, bottle wine. This might be one of the Pinot I helped bottle, but I can't recall. Gideon was such an exemplar of the perfect wine shepherding mentor. Probably the very best Pinot I've tasted was a Pinot Gideon offered me after one of these trips from an 80's vintage -- a Renaissance bottling. There really can be something about that saying to age like fine wine. This '08 bottle from Clos Saron was probably an understated specimen on release. It's alive, and therefore changeable and prone to perhaps throwing folks off in its infancy. Now it reaching for something like maturity, but it has such structure and balance that we have decades to go before some kind of maturity apex. The iron, mineral and earth here offer underpinnings of a palatial structure that is built up to such lofty heights to express an art form that can only the Earth could yield. Man this is blessed stuff, and I'm still on the very first glass pour. I think to treasure in these Pinot wines from Clos Saron is their ability to truly improve in complexity and grace through decades of aging. Just classic, living beauty!

Popped and poured. Pure cherry aroma. Archetypal California cherry cola flavor, licorice in the sappy finish. Firm backbone, rich and transparent flavors, some complexity, good staying power. Excellent if you like the style, and still very good even for those of us whose preferences lie elsewhere.

This is in a great place right now, fairly deep and dark fruit with some good baking spices and sous bois rounding it out. When Clos Saron is on, it's on!

Gotta be honest. Completely going reverse on CT opinion on the CS pinot vintages and favor the 07 and 09 dramatically to the 08. The 08 was simply a bit vacant. Didn't improve on the 2nd day either. But dark fruits with some mineral on the finish. Rather brooding and dumb (but for me that's the 08's). Modest finish. Good acid. Medium plus bodied, but just shut down. Maybe it will open? Consider holding.

This is more mellow now than earlier. Soft cherry, dark berry fruit with a nice mineral core. Very nice effort.
