Served double-blind at Charlie's. Note recorded from memory. Toward the end of a long evening of double-blind challenges, Charlie declared this wine was from the dark side, meaning it was virtually impossible to guess. At first I had to agree with him: massive waves of red fruit, hints of chocolate, and a rich sweet finish powered by a lot of alcohol. Sagrantino passito? Ripasso barbera? I had a blank and vacant expression for about 5 minutes and then it hit me-Banyuls! So sue me, I've never had a 16.5% alcohol cannonau before. I'm just happy I got the grape right. I understand this is a very idiosyncratic wine and I can see why.

3/25/2017 - Italiana Likes this wine:
Cork 3/4 soaked, but sound. Deep garnet. Savory fresh aromas. Uber-rich. Manages the 14%+ alcohol well.
