Adding this tasting note just for the sake of information regarding drinking windows for these. My brother and I brought a few of these back from a trip to the Domaine way back in 2007. They were fantastic when young and fresh, and my last bottle was still showing very well when I opened it in 2013. Lots of varietal character, but perhaps just a little more subtle than the oftentimes brash and boozy CA offerings.
The last bottle, opened in May 2022, was pretty tired. The nose at first was very promising, having lost very little of it's jammy and pepper Zin character. In the glass though, things fell apart pretty fast. It was pretty thin from the get-go, having lost most of its fruit. It had taken on a little bit of that over-mature, almost vegetal character that tired wines get. Tannins gone, fruit 80% gone, and acidity to the forefront. No oxidation though.
It was drinkable - just - and we finished our glasses, but didn't go back for a 2nd pour.
Look, this is a great, and fun wine. A well grown example of a grape raised outside of its native land. If you find a new bottling of this, buy it! But based on my experience, drink it before its 10th birthday or so.
