I had no expectations for this bottle, but what a surprise! Mineral, seal salt, grapefruit, lime zest and hay. Medium finish with perfect acidity. This was consumed over two hours and showed no decline. Perfect with our seafood dinner, and quite cleansing and refreshing. I would never have guessed that this was 13%, but it was a real treat. 91-93

(SELBACH-OSTER Pinot Blanc) 2009 Germany Dear Friends, Ok, this one is a giddy, laugh-out loud example that reached heights never before witnessed by Johannes and his family (I'm referring to numerous generations of the Selbach family). 2009 may be a legend in the making with Riesling but it may have been usurped by another varietal... Pinot Blanc. Yes, Pinot Blanc. Known for their vast array of 1st-tier Riesling, Selbach-Oster also produces a world-class Pinot Blanc that is typically held for the German and European market. We’ve offered it in the past but in 2009 there was no decision to make – the wine made the decision for me. No fuder numbers, pradikat levels or other – this is Pinot Blanc in the hands of a white wine master and the young material was noted from the get-go to be of a superlative nature. Coddled on the vine into September, Selbach-Oster decided to bottle this wine as an “estate” wine instead of a simple JH Selbach or other – a telling decision as the family only bottles their very best lots as “Selbach-Oster” (a label typically reserved for Riesling). In 2009, the more well known grape of the Mosel can take a step aside as a new kid on the block is about to yodel from the mountaintops like a Ricola commercial stuck on infinite loop... Vinified dry with a nervous tension one would normally associate with Riesling, this wine has loads of personality and electricity pent up in its citrus and mineral slathered soul. Long on the palate, absurdly long for Pinot Blanc, the pure flavors of grape must and nearly solid extractive stay in the mouth for well over a minute. Despite a quasi-unctuous texture, the most alluring facet of the wine’s personality is an uncanny freshness and defining sense of acidity that remains - a hallmark of the best 2009 wines in Germany (and all over Europe for that matter – when 2009 gets it right, all of the elements are elevated and all are in harmony). If you like to discover the unknown, the unusual or the multidimensional regardless of fashion or other, this is a gem you will not see everyday and it’s priced to enjoy several times per week (with or without your entourage - you may choose to keep this stash for yourself – it’s not selfish, just prudent). A steal of a deal. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for rarity and high quality that speaks proudly of its heritage and fastidious upbringing.
