  • Flickinger dinner (Chicago, IL): This was a bit of a tough one; every time I went to it, I couldn't shake the slight nagging note of TCA on it, even though it didn't seem to have it all the time, and that I was one of two or three who noticed it at all. Certainly the nose is a little dirty, with some barnyard notes, even though the fruit is still bright and fresh. I quite liked the lift here, but the distracting dirty/TCA notes just got in the way too much for me.

  • Flickinger Warehouse Tasting (Chicago, IL): A wine very much to my liking. This is silky red fruit all the way from the nose to the finish. Elegant, light, with a lovely spice touch to it. Not the most complex of Burgundies, but drinking fantastically at the moment. Almost certainly at its peak now.

  • Fully mature, and rather thin, but with sufficient fruit remaining to make for an agreeable drink.

  • Medium red with some maturity at the meniscus. Excellent aromatic progression over 2 hours. First, pungent, brambly, Savigny like tones, then a riper element of black cherry, kirsch, and some secondary high notes, and finally, licorice and stemminess. Very enjoyable mix of lighter Volnay weight, crisp black fruit with '93 acidity, and the addition of some sweetness and flesh as it sits out. Excellent, although its turn for the worse toward the end of the bottle suggests not holding much longer. Although Boillot is regularly slammed for overoaked Volnay, this was not the case here. Quite pure, in fact, although less linear and taut than, say, Angerville.

  • Slight bricking at the edges with a light purple center. A little disjointed during the first hour or so this came together very nicely. Aromas of potting soil and very pure fruit including cherries and strawberry. Seamless finish. I wish I had more as this was an excellent example of a Volnay hitting it's stride.
