  • A good example of why it is better to buy the second wine in a good(ish) year than the first wine in an off-year. I preferred this as a wine over the '97 Ducru B at less than half the price

  • From auctionlot so provenance is unknown. Opened and poured right away. First snif and taste - nothing but freshly cut cigar (and plumstone says the wife 🤔). Cedar keeps appearing, but with air a lot of other tertiary notes, Provence herbs, forest floor, .... All secondary notes but still very much alive.
    Hard to score but 89 - 91?
Tasted alongside 2001, that still has a lot of primary notes.

  • Tasted straight from the bottle and decided not to decant.

The wine clear, looks Ruby coloured. The legs are medium. There is moderate sediment in the bottle.

On the nose: Coffee, Caramel, Vanilla/Oak, Dark fruit, slight Barnyard.

On the palate: Ripe plum and cassis, Vanilla, pear at the end with a nice minerality throughout.

    The body is medium.
    The wine has smooth texture.
    The wine finishes long.
    The wine has medium acidity.
    The wine medium Tannins.

Clearly Bordeaux and St Julien in style.
Lovely Velvet like texture and mouthfeel but still with "zing" off freshness.
Excellent structure and balance. A very complex wine that is in its prime.

  • Cristal ruby-ish in colour, rather deep, nose of autumny dried red fruits, sweet minerals with a hint of oak! Rather full on the palate, a medium chocolaty finish! Fully mature! This is nice!

  • - Garnet color and aromas of rose and has flavours of dusty with a medium/full body. Bright texture with a long finish - Much better than prior bottle. More depth and structure, with intensity to match lamb. Perfect. Not over the hill.
