Best “old” bottle I’ve had in a long time. Huge bouquet on PnP — across the spectrum of fresh berries and purple flowers, stewed spiced fruit, and (after 15 minutes) caramel and port notes. Palate was carried by a lovely cherry acidity but with really nice hints of mushroom and pine. Fully resolved tannins, but still plenty of body with a silky texture. Huge hit with all six people who tried it.

Good garnet and autum color, hazy, and opaque. Smells are brown sugar, blood, tobacco, and black olive. Tastes are brown sugar, currants, earth, olive, and leathery notes. Finish is delicious and sour with nearly resolved tannins and long earthy after tatse. One of the best old Cali cabs I have tasted.

77 Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma – It’s tough to compare to the 77 Napa as it was SO good, but the Sonoma held up well. Not as dark, but nearly as aromatic. Cassis, earth, leather, pencil lead and a sweetness on the nose. Layer after layer of flavor. There is still plenty of pure Montelena black fruits, followed by cassis, leather, tobacco, caramel and honey nuances. This wine is beautifully balanced, but still has the full Montelena structure. Soft silky tannins in a very long finish

(Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County) Sexy beef jus, cedar and caramel nose; tasty, tart and tangy black fruit and plum palate; medium-plus finish

Give it about 20-30 minutes to open up and this is drinking really well right now.
