(BOOKWALTER Cabernet Foreshadow) Cabernet Dear Friends, This one’s for all the new people on the Email List – those that have asked for boutique-level domestic Cabernet or something other than our core high acid/no-fruit choices (you’ve tired of Gamay and prickly Sauvignon Blanc already? You’ve only been on the list for a week? We’ll beat you down eventually...) One of the benefits of our location within Washington State is an ear-to-the-ground philosophy that gives us a direct pipeline to many of the more unknown, small production entrants that have yet to be discovered outside of the Northwest and that usually means exemplary pricing on wine primed for national attention. With that.. Today’s offer is about one thing: Cabernet Sauvignon...and a mouthful at that. Last year’s 2007 Bookwalter Cabernet “Foreshadow” opened the door for this relatively unknown, small-scale winery from our state with accolades (and points) to perk up many casual observers. The wine sold out quickly and Bookwalter has a waiting list for the 2008. The good news? The 2008’s are even better (you knew I was going to say that). If you ask John Bookwalter, he will not so candidly offer the fact that the 2008 Foreshadow is one of the top wines ever produced from his eponymous cellar – even better than the highly reviewed 2007: “Here are my thoughts on ’08. This is the first vintage that Claude Gros (of Chateau de la Negly La Clape fame) and I took from 4 months of aging (he came on board February 2009) through to blending so this vintage definitely wears a bit of his stamp and what we are trying to accomplish, which is largely, bring the fruit forward, brighten the wines up and reduce the oak impact from a flavor and tannin perspective. He was very pleased with what we were able to accomplish. Overall we also declassified at a much higher rate than, for example, in 2006 and 2007. We produced no Chapter Wine in 2008, reduced our “reserve” white label Conflict and Protagonist significantly and to the point where they are likely not to leave the winery to the distribution channel which significantly improved, in my opinion, the Foreshadow tier of Cabernet and Merlot.” That doesn’t sound like a Cabernet, that sounds like a Cabernet? Due to your grandiose support of his wines last year, John Bookwalter has decided to offer you pricing on the 2008 that is a one-time/one-day situation – basically the wholesale cost. If you are getting impatient with all the eccentric European choices we’ve sent your way (or simply wish to stock your cellar with terrific price/value Cabernet), today’s the day. For more information on this winery, please see Paul Gregutt’s article penned in the spring of 2010 (for those of you still unfamiliar with Paul, he is one of the top experts on Washington State – he’s the main wine authority for the Seattle Times and is also the reviewer for the Wine Enthusiast - by the way, Paul has just come out with a terrific book on Washington State wines – look for an offer from us in the next week): http://www.paulgregutt.com/2010/04/joys-of-j-bookwalter.html For reference on the style, here is Paul’s review of the 2007 Foreshadow Cabernet, keep in mind what John Bookwalter said above regarding the 2008: This parcel is directly from the winery cellar with with impeccable provenance. FIRST COME FIRST SERVED up to 36/person until we run out – pricing valid today only... 2008 J. Bookwalter Cabernet Sauvignon “Foreshadow” - (compare at $32-40+, you can check pricing of the 2007 for comparison) To order: niki@garagistewine.com This wine will arrive in a week or two (please check OARS for local pick up after Nov 15th).
