  • NobleRottersSydney - Best of Tasmania (Verde, East Sydney): {diam, 13.5% } A lot of Tasmanian cabernet blends taste distinctly green to a ‘mainland’ palate; the Pooley offering has been hugely improved lately. Some earlier (ie. 2004) vintages I’ve tasted couldn’t quite conceal an unripe quality. The warm vintages of the late noughties have been very good to Tasmania, however. This is a 65/35 blend produced from only 1 or 2 barriques. The 2012 return of award-winning winemaker Anna Pooley to the family fold promises greater wines in future years. This was even better than I remembered it; a slightly-developing, medium-intensity nose with a touch of herbs but mostly strongly current-scented cool-climate cabernet aromas. The dry palate spotlights medium chalky tannin, leafy but ripe fruits, firm acid, even presence on the tongue, and a medium-length, nicely-blended finish. Classy wine, fruity but not a bomb, yet still juicily flavoured. Ought to sail through the next ten years easily given the impeccable balance.

  • Derwent & Coal Valley wineries; 4/20/2011-4/21/2011 (Hobart, Tasmania): {screwcap, 13.8%, A$40} Bright pepper/spice nose, with cherry/plum fruits and a ripe sort of leafiness. Really seems more merlot than cabernet. There’s a fairly light touch with the oak; the palate is quite loose-knit, with soft powdery tannins and sweet merlot flavours carrying the wine along. Pretty much medium-sized as far as structural aspects go, it has a medium length finish that doesn’t really make it right to the back palate, but it’s a fairly decent wine despite that; and a huge step forward over the previous 2004 vintage of this similar blend (had some shiraz in it - which didn't help).
