Introduction

Another year…another six nations. I'll often write about elbows at dawn and perfumed ladies but this is the pinnacle of those types of events…self pour and every man (and woman) for themselves. This is my third year. Don't get me wrong I love this tasting but I'm still honing my plan of attack. A step closer this year with a fully printed out list of wines to try...As usual apologies apply for these most perfunctory of notes. They are based on first impressions and list what I smell (in order) and, if applicable, notes on the taste and palate feel. More of a record for myself than anything else.

Flight 1 - Bracket 1 - Chardonnay (45 Notes)

Yes, there are plenty of aromatic wines at this tasting but I love Chardonnay, that most plasticine of grapes, time at the tasting is restrictive and it is here, consequently, that I commence my tasting.

The Vasse Felix Heytesbury was my winner with callouts for the Neudorf, Rustenburg, Clos du Val and Sonoma Cutrer

Flight 2 - Bracket 2 - Cab Sav and blends (35 Notes)

After the Chardonnay onto the Cab Savs - Should have been the Pinot and the Syrah first but I wanted to blitz the cab savs first as these tend to be very popular

callouts for the Trapiche, Babich wines, Diemersdal, Mulderbosch, Louis Martini...

Flight 3 - Bracket 3 - Pinot Noir (17 Notes)

A quick bite to eat post the cab savs and plenty of water and off to the pinots (which were few and far between)…I went straight to the US and faired well there but by the time I got to Australia there were only a couple and Kiwi's were completely depleted…

callouts for the Au bon Climat, Drew and Dutton Goldfield

Flight 4 - Bracket 4 - Shiraz (10 Notes)

Again by the time I got to the tables, wines were few and far between - the South African one looked like a plague of drunken locusts had been through it! A touch disappointing as I 'd been looking forward to trying quite a few of these.

callouts for the Luca Wines, Levantine Hill, Goldie Wines, Amapola and Reustle

Flight 5 - Bracket 5 - other bits and pieces (2 Notes)

Just a couple of wines I tried at other peoples recommendation

Closing

Lots of highs and lows for this tasting…High points were all vinious but the lowest point was watching an absolute arsehole empty a full bottle into four glasses and then when I asked for a taste he slurred "Oopsh, ish all gone".
