  • 2017 Stolpman Roussanne 90 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Ballard Canyon

£12.50/glass. Immediately-apparent varietal characteristics, amped up in Californian style without going over the edge. Very much enjoyed. With venison loin, Jerusalem artichoke, roasted quince and trompette mushroom. Chosen to match the quince, which it did very well, and to bring out that not-quite-sweetness in some of the other components of the dish.

  • 2016 Day Zinfandel

    USA, California, Sonoma County

£13.50/glass. Dark and brambly is right, not cloying but not particularly fresh (perhaps because served by the glass). Good texture. With venison loin, jerusalem artichoke, quince, trompette. Chosen to go with the Jerusalem artichoke which is otherwise pretty tough to match, without overwhelming the venison. Good pairing, decent complement, but no more than the sum of the parts.

  • 2011 Mouthes Le Bihan Côtes-de-Duras La Lionne et le Désert

    France, Southwest France, Côtes-de-Duras

£16.50/glass. To go with Roquefort and Beaufort cheeses (with two different honeys and seed crackers), as well as the banoffee, nutmeg and caramelised pecan mousse. Terrific with both. Deep and rich and treacly without being at all cloying, a pleasant surprise given the depth of colour.

  • NV Famille Moussé Ratafia de Champagne Edmond Ratafia t'en penses quoi?

    France, Champagne, Ratafia de Champagne

£12.50/glass. To go with Roquefort and Beaufort cheeses (with two different honeys and seed crackers), as well as the banoffee, nutmeg and caramelised pecan mousse. Good match with both. Rafafia liqueur added to stop the fermentation, giving it more of a spirit-like sense than a dessert wine. Much more refreshing than I would expect from a dessert wine, making it a really good match for both the richness and the sweetness.
