Introduction

A small group of us met up at The Ledbury to continue our Burgundy Grower series. This time DeVogue and people were very generous with 9 different vintages of being brought and 4 vintages of Bonnes-Mares
Brett cooked up a fantastic meal for us and everyone was really excited to tuck in

Flight 1 - Amouse Bouche of Foie Gras on a Ginger Bread Disc

We had a 1985 Ruinart from magnum with this which was very nice but i didnt take any notes

Flight 2 - Quails Egg in Katafi Pastry with Chestnut Paste (1 Note)

  • 1999 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bourgogne Blanc 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

Vogue Dinner @ The Ledbury- clean light yellow color, touch of minerals and lemony nose, in the mouth a touch warm but clean and light, energetic, felt very early in the development stage, bright ...very much enjoyed this. i think it would have developed nicely over dinner

Flight 3 - Root Vegetables Baked in Salt and Clay with Lardo di Colonnaia, Marrow (4 Notes)

  • 2000 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Vogue Dinner @ The Ledbury - light purple color, youth ful nose of cherries, dark fruits and spices. in the mouth this is very young still sowing a fair amount of new oak in a toasty spicy vanilla way, lots of cherries and sweet fruits, nice mouth coating, medium length, early in development, easy to drink now but will go for a fairly long time. nice way to start a flight of reds

  • 1997 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Vogue Dinner @ The Ledbury - light violet color, nose a little bit in the middle of primary and secondary. in the mouth still showing some red fruit, a zip of energy, clean and a nice texture, with a bit of dry red wine feel. if i didnt know this was a '97 i would have been surprised

  • 1996 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Bonnes Mares 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Vogue Dinner @ The Ledbury - dark color, brooding nose, with a bit of coaxing you get some fruit. a bit less showy then its two preceeding BM. in the mouth dry , clean full mouth. nice tuch of sharp fruit via acidity. long in the mouth and full, this wine wasnt giving much tonight , slightly backward, but balance and fullness leads me to believe we just try it again in 5 years

DeVogue Dinner @ The Ledbury - Lightening around the edges, med/light weight, complex erthiness on the mouth , a touch of nail polish...enjoyed thisvery much for the structure but as flavor goes a bit tight and worth drinking up. great bones

this was followed by
Shoulder of Venison Cooked for Eight Hours with Jerusalem Artichokes and Apple

Flight 6 - Pear Cooked in Brown Butter with Salted Caramel, Grilled Peanut Oil Parfait and Porridge Crisps (1 Note)

we finished with a 1976 Chateau de Fargues Sauternes... by this time no notes but this was a very nice ends to a good night

Closing

i have to say i was very pleasantly surprised by the whole series of wines. In general i usually think DeVogue's wines lack a bit of energy or are just not as memorable as some of his contomperaries but these wines were delicious and i would definately love to revisit many of them in the next 5-10 years
The cooking was nothing short of amazing, with the raviolo of beef short rib being one of the best courses i have had at The Ledbury
