Introduction

My first time visit to UGC and my first serious tasting of the 2010 vintage. My scores are perhaps a bit conservative, with the score indicating the lower end of where I am quite confident those wines will go. While the differences in styles and quality in these young wines are quite obvious, and the upside they all have is very clear, my experience with such young vintages is rather limited, and hence I find it always difficult to put an exact number onto where they will be at their peak.

The wine of the tasting was the Pichon Comtesse de Lalande in my eyes, and the best QPRs are the "smaller" wines in Pessac (Latour Martillac, Malartic Lagraviere, Fieuzal etc) and the Cantemerle.

Flight 1 (34 Notes)

  • 2010 Château Clinet 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Garnet. A fairly closed nose, good balance on the palate but not very giving at this point in time. Medium finish. 92+
Clinet did not stand out among the couple Pomerols at the tasting and I found the wine a bit disappointing given all the speculation about Parker rating this again 100 Pts.

  • 2010 Château Le Bon Pasteur 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Dark garnet. A very unusual nose with herbs and something like crushed fir needles and a bit sharp citrus. The nose carried onto the full bodied palate where there was more dark fruit and chocolate. Medium plus finish. 92/93+

  • 2010 Château Poujeaux 88 Points

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc

Garnet. Very generous wood / oak use which in combination with the relatively light style does not show particularly well at this point in time. Much leaner that Cantemerle and others. Slightly bitter on the palate. Short to medium finish. 88+

  • 2010 Château Brane-Cantenac 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Not sure if perhaps a bad bottle but this was clearly the most disappointing wine of the tasting. Plenty of oak / wood here masking any Margaux characteristics the fruit might have. Infact this resembled more a simple Haut Medoc at the tasting. 88+

  • 2010 Domaine de Chevalier 91 Points

  • 2010 Château de Fieuzal 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

After the very convincing 09 Fieuzal I had a few days ago, this is another very good vintage for them. A nose with surprisingly animal or even fecal notes, dark berries, nice balance, medium tannins, medium finish. Excellent wine and great QPR 92+

  • 2010 Château Haut-Bergey 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

  • 2010 Château Malartic-Lagravière 92 Points

  • 2010 Château Smith Haut Lafitte 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Dark garnet to the rim, big fruit, big oak. Tannins are well in check. Medium + finish. This will need time, can see the quality but a bit too much of everything for me at this point in time. 93+

  • 2010 Château Figeac 93 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

  • 2010 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

This was one of the last wines I tried before concluding that my palate was getting numb and called it a day. This seemed in good balance but did not seem particularly expressive or interesting. 91+ (?)
