Bordeaux 2010 Vintage Horizontal Tasting (at home with dear friends)
This tasting was a total shock for me – in the most pleasant way. How can (relatively) young Grand Cru Bordeaux taste so drinkable?! Wow!!!
The wines were decanted four hours prior, yet they were still evolving in the glass.
Château Tronquoy-Lalande, Saint-Estèphe 93 p. Nose: Dark berries, a mixture of tertiary aromas (eg. hint of lacquer), tobacco. Palate: Mid fullbodied, long, succulant, dark berries, sweet fruits, a bit leather, silky tannins. 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot
Château Pontet-Canet, Pauillac 95 p. Nose: Cassis (jam), layers of tertiary aromas, smokey vanilla, velvety leather. Palate: Rather fullbodies, very long, succulant, fruity, dark berries, some cherry, leather, elegant “dusty” tannins. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot
Château Gloria, Saint-Julien 93 p. Nose: Mouth watering, succulant, red berries, tertiary aromas, smoked toffee. Palate: Initially strong attack, rather fullbodied, fruity, long, prunes. (63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot)
Château Gruaud Larose, Saint-Julien 92 p. Nose: Initially (pleasant) hint of barnyard and ripe red berries, later jammed red berries and hint of cherry, tertiary aromas (eg. dry flower potpourri and hint of lacquer), pencil/cedar wood. Palate: Mid fullbodied, fruity, prunes, (dried) fruits, silky tannins, rather long. (66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot)

Much anticipated bottle of GL from the 2010 class. To be fair I'd like to rate this in 2 pieces. The first half of the bottle and then the second. The first half was shy and closed. Maybe it was the shitty, tight glasses that we used. Not much on the nose, not much in the mouth other than a distinct Cabernet with high acidity and low florals. The finish was just meh...eveything was meh. A stretch to a 91...The second half showed much more heft and started to throw more scorched dark earth, laced with nuances of Gruaud Funk and a whop of dark fruit. The finish changed as well, becoming much more classic, deeper and echoing. The second half was a 94. I would really not try any of these for at least 5 years...A note to self. HOLD_

Afterthought – A long time ago, I rated the '03 100pts, higher than the '03 Latour. This became a big joke amongst my tasting group. Oh well, deja vu?"

Bleh. I had two old school Gruauds last weekend, the 1978 and 1986, with the great old barnyard and Cordier funk. This was not that. The color was promising, a deep purple/black. The nose was modest. But I got nothing of the old school forest floor 1970s-80s Cordier earthiness. It seemed quite flabby, lacking acidity and definition, like some of the 2005s I've tasted. It was 14%, it didn't seem "overly alcoholic" but it did seem flabby. Someone on CT described it as fresh and exhibiting the old school Cordier barnyard style, I'm happy for him because I got absolutely zero of that in this bottle. It wasn't flawed or anything, and it is still a 90 point wine, but nothing approaching the mythical Cordier wines of the golden era of the 70s-80s. I wouldn't necessarily call it "Parkerized," but it certainly seemed internationalized, not boring but certainly not interesting. Rating: 90 points.

Opened up quickly. Not much decanting time needed. Good aroma, body and finish.
