Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. More floral and tad more airy than the previous wine with orchard fruit and a touch of vanilla bean. On the palate medium weight with good acidity and vanilla spice on the finish. A bit more complexity here than the Charmois. (88-90).

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. This needed a bit of coaxing to emerge from the glass but eventually nice floral, yellow fruit and apple came out to play. A bit weightier than the previous wines a good bit of dry extract on the palate and a minerally finish. (88-90).

Tasted at the Domaine. Served blind. This had a huge nose of orchard fruits, honey and a hint of vanilla, but also a fairly strong note of caramel. Weighty and mouth coating on the palate with great length and tension on the palate. Based on the nose this seems like it has quite a bit of age on it, but the palate is quite fresh. When this was revealed as ’08 Montrachet I almost shit myself. Sad to see such a great wine already advanced.

Tasted at the Domaine. Nice juicy pinot fruit with a hint of spice on the nose. Quite pure on the palate with good weight, tart red fruits and chalky tannins. Decent length with more tart fruits on the finish. Needs 3-5 years. Very good. 89+

Tasted at the Domaine. A bit more complexity here than the previous wine and also a touch darker in profile. More serious on the palate as well. Only complaint is a bitter finish. Hard to tell where this is going.

Tasted at the Domaine. Masculine nose with deep red fruits and a touch of spice. Velvety and quite supple on the entry than the firm tannins take over. Fruit on the palate is dark, sweet and pure. There’s plenty of acidity to match the tannins. Loads of potential here. This will need a decade at least. Excellent. 90+

Tasted at the Domaine. Spicy nose with darker pinot fruit with a hint of floral. Entry isn’t as soft as the previous wine and this comes across as even more masculine with muscular tannins, great acidity and a firm overall profile. The fruit here seems less dark than the Rugiens before it. This will also needs 10-15 years. Very good. 89+

Tasted at the Domaine. A little shy at first but after some swirling beautiful notes of red and black pinot fruit emerged from the glass. Finely textured on the palate with excellent weight and firm powdery tannins. Acidity here is very good. At this this brutally youthful stage, I’d rather drink the Rugiens, but I think they both possess outstanding potential. Excellent. 90+

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Fairly dark fruited nose with white pepper and a hint of green. Masculine on the palate (for a Volnay) with darker fruits. This was very good and seems to have some future upside but the green notes on the nose are a concern for me.

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Nice nose, quite expressive with brighter notes of cherry and spice.. Lighter in weight with excellent acidity, firm/dry tannins and solid length. Unfortunately I got a touch of greenness on palate so I’m not sure where this is going.

Great nose with all the classic Chablis aromas (lemon tart, minerals, sea breeze) with tart citrus on the palate and boatloads of acid and freshness. Energy and class. Can be thoroughly enjoyed now or held for years. Excellent. 92+

This was tight at first and needed some time to open up with classic Coche notes, gun flint, lit match, yellow fruits, mineral and citrus. Richer than the 07 Dauvissat Forest but has all the minerality, tension and focus you would expect. The balance between the richness and the chiselled profile on the palate is incredible. So good now, possibly better in 5, 7 or 10+ years. Excellent. 92+

Rich and pure dark red pinot fruit nose that carries over on to the palate with an extremely polished and silky mouthfeel. The acidity is more than adequate to give energy and lift to the rounder and velvety texture. There’s a hint of wood on both the nose and finish which should integrate well over the next 5-7 years, when this wine might be getting into its mature drinking window. Excellent. 90+

Tasted at the Domaine. From half bottle. Hint of stems/green on the nose with dark red fruits underneath. A step down in intensity compared to the 2010. The tannins are chalky and almost bitter. Excellent acidity. Palate shows some green/bitterness as well. Not sure about this one.

Tasted at the Domaine. From half bottle. Greener nose (some may call this stemmy or herbal but to me it’s green and off-putting) with slightly bitter tannins. Lighter in body.

Tasted at the Domaine. From half bottle. Tight nose but the best one yet with pure and elegant pinot fruit, smoke and a hint of earthiness. Fruit profile is on the darker side. Step up in the intensity and length compared to the Combottes but the tannins slightly drying and bitter. Unfortunately, as this sat in the glass some green notes appeared on the nose as well. Doesn’t have the polish of the CSD or CdlR.

Tasted at the Domaine. From half bottle. Best nose yet with spicy wood, floral, dark pinot fruit and a hint of smoke. No green here that I could detect. Good intensity but also shows the elegance of the vintage. If the GMs/LBT stay away, this will be a beautiful wine once it reaches its potential. Hands off for at least 15 years. Excellent. 92+

Tasted at the Domaine. From half bottle. This had a brilliant nose—savoury and sappy with meaty and maturing dark raspberry/cherry notes. Fairly weighty on the palate with excellent richness and acidity. Starting to drink very well from half bottle and I imagine 750s will continue to develop for decades. Outstanding. 93+

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Hint of green on the nose hiding some pretty Chambolle fruit. Silky palate, a tad fleshy with nice acidity. I do get some green notes on the palate as well. Rounder than the 2010 which is sharper and more precise.

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Spicy dark red fruit nose, but there is a hint of green. Some green notes on the entry too. Dark cherry fruit, good minerality on the palate. Not as green as Combottes but it is still noticeable here. A bit more structured then Combottes.

Tasted at the Domaine. Great nose—very pure with sappy red pinot fruit along with a touch of reduction. Tart cherry and raspberry on the palate with excellent acidity, fine tannins and loads of energy and focus. Should be outstanding in 10-15 years. Excellent. 92+

Tasted at the Domaine. According to Ghislaine this site only has 20cm of soil with some white clay underneath. Ripe nose with some fleshiness showing through. Darker red fruits with great balance and acidity. Tighter on the finish. No sense of over ripeness here at all. A very classy ’09 Chambolle. Needs 5-7 years and probably more. Excellent. 91+

Tasted at the Domaine. 70 year old vines. Served blind. Seems like a warmer year based on the ripeness and charming profile. On the palate this was extremely silky with loads of elegance and solid acidity. Drinking well now but could use another 3-5 years. Excellent. 90+

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Beautiful nose, pure and floral. Delicate palate, red fruited, good minerality. Great acidity. No green on the nose but a very subtle hint of green on the palate, but by no means is this wine full blown green like other 2011s I’ve tasted. This will be approachable early but still would be best to wait 5 years or so. Hopefully the hint of greenness remains subtle and/or dissipates over time.

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. This plot is right next to Bonnes Mares. Not as floral as the CM aoc but more earth and complexity here. Slightly darker red fruits, a bit weightier but delicate. Really nice intensity for the vintage. (90-92).

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Darker fruit nose with more weight than the Fuees. Great acidity with fine yet chalky tannins. Long finish with an overall firm and masculine profile while still clearly showing its Chambolle roots. This was a bit shut down and hard to judge but seems promising. (91-94?).

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Great nose of darker red fruit with a bit of spice. Firmer tannins than previous three wines and doesn't have the elegance of the CMs. Will need 7-10 years. (89-92).

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Floral nose, hint of spice and darker red fruits. Great acidity and balance on the palate with a silky entry. I do get just a touch of green/bitterness on the palate. Hard to judge. No green on nose but just a touch on palate.

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. A bit shut down on the nose, darker red pinot fruit, lots of depth. After some vigorous swirling a subtle lifted/herbaceous note emerges which has me concerned. Great acidity, fine tannins but well-structured and great intensity on the palate. Lacy texture. While this doesn’t seem nearly as bad, it would a real shame if this wine turns out like the 04 has.

Tasted at the Domaine. Beautiful nose; expressive and floral with pure red pinot fruits. Great acidity and balance with fine yet and grippy tannins. Has a delicate but intense palate. Solid length with a tart and sappy raspberry finish. Texture is wonderful for a village wine. Complex for such a young wine. Needs 7+ years. Excellent. 90+

Tasted at the Domaine. Darker than CM with a bolder nose; hint of violets and darker red pinot fruit. Weightier in the mouth but the texture is rich yet fairly silky. Finishes with more oomph than the CM but the Domaine style trumps the NSG origin. Structure of a NSG, elegance and fruit of Mugnier Chambolle—a winning combo. Needs 10 years at least. Excellent. 91+

Tasted at the Domaine. Nice nose showing a hint of development. Great structure and acidity. There’s enough material and fruit to balance the acidity and the fine yet firm tannins. Finishes with tremendous energy and cut. Excellent. 91+

Tasted at the Domaine. This seemed to be firing on all cylinders. Very young but the fruit is so rich and sappy and elegant that it’s surprisingly approachable. There’s underlying firm structure but it’s almost burred by the depth of the fruit. The length is incredible. While this is deep and rich and somewhat approachable, hands off for 15+ years unless you have a good stash of this beauty. So much potential here. Outstanding. 93+

Pure and lively nose with incredible tension and freshness on the palate. Citrus, wood and florals dominate the profile here. This didn’t show as much of the “Coche” signature as the 09 did last year. Can enjoy now with air or age it for 5+ years. Excellent. 90+

Insanely tight at first giving up nothing on the nose. Opened up a tad, but never became expressive or open in any way. The palate, on the other hand, was as good as young white burg gets with lemon squirt, saline and minerals wrapped in a rocky and acidic blanket. This will be much more interesting in 5-10 years. Even though the nose is extremely tight at the moment, the palate is great in a youthful way, especially if you love saline, acid, minerals and searing lemon. Loads of potential. Excellent. 91+

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Malo nose, egg/sulphur and pure red cherry. Hard to judge but the fruit seems very pure and soft. On the palate candied red pure pinot fruit with excellent energy and silky texture despite the granny smith apple/malo acid. Should be a great Chambolle. (90-92).

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Young (<25 years) vines from Musigny. 25 years or young vines from Musigny. Similar malo/sulphur nose as the CM aoc, but again beautiful and pure red fruit underneath with hints of floral, pepper and cinnamon. Beautifully textured on the palate with a silky profile with pure pomegranate and raspberry flavours. A minerally and chalky finish. Will need a decade. (92-94).

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. These vines are located at the most southern part of the vineyard. Hint of reduction and minerals on the nose with lovely pomegranate, raspberry and other darker pinot fruit. Some spice too. Extremely pure, silky and velvety on the palate. The purity is equally matched by the energetic and lively acidity. Candied red fruits with a limestone and mineral laden finish. There’s plenty of intensity but with a lighter and elegant body. (93-96).

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Darkest colour yet, almost a purple hue within the red. Nose offers mainly red cherry aromas with black cherry and blueberry hints. Less pretty of a nose than the previous wines, but darker. Tart mouthfeel and less silky but with more weight. The fruit is sappy with a beautiful sweetness that goes well with tart blueberry finish. Plenty of structure here and malic acid is more obvious here without the minerality to help mask it. More direct than the previous wines with good energy and a bigger personality. The sappiness of the red fruits along with the tartness of the blueberry finish and the acidity/energy is a great combo. (93-96).

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. 25-60 year old vines. Ruby mineral colour but a bit darker than the CM 1er. Pomegranate, raspberry and blackberry aromas with of course the malo gas masking some of the other nuances. The palate is pure, silky and all about finesse. Blackcurrant dominates on the palate with loads of minerals and fine chalky tannins. There’s a subtle spice that comes through on the finish. The malic is obvious but doesn't hide the quality and purity. Excellent acidity and tremendous length. The limestone notes on the finish reminds me of the Amoureuses. Wow, what a wine this will be. (94-97).

Pronounced nose of riper citrus, saline, sweet lemon and minerals. On the palate offers great weight and persistence with loads of acidity and minerality. Tightens up on the finish with superb cut and candied lemon. A bit of a riper nose, but this is classic Chablis through and through. Quite approachable but will age for decades. Outstanding. 93+

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Delicate nose of red cherries and wood spices. Fine tannins and great acidity give rise to the raspberry flavours. There’s nice tension here and while it’s a bigger wine it still shows excellent elegance, but doesn’t have the finesse of the de Vogue Amoureuses. (92-95).

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. A bigger wine, but ripe and not as elegant as the Amoureuses. Don't get the minerality that I got on the de Vogue Musigny. Not weighty but still powerful. Very nice texture but closed and fairly square right now and not as showy as the Amoureuses. Will need 20+ years. (92-95).

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Again, there’s a touch of herbal/green aromas along with pretty red fruit underneath. More elegance than the 2012 Musigny. Mouthfeel is excellent, silky and velvety, but there’s a drying/bitterness to the tannins. Very disappointed to see the GM/LBT show up here.

Tasted at the Domaine. Darker red cherries and raspberries dominate the nose with hints of floral. Quite a pretty nose. Sappy red pinot fruit on the palate with fine tannins and excellent acidity. Tasted at the Domaine. Nice nose, spice, darker red cherries and a touch of wood spice. Lighter and elegant on the palate with crunchy red fruits, great acidity and fairly tight and drying tannins. Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Airy chardonnay nose with loads of lemon and stone fruits. Even some tart pear appears after some time in the glass. On the palate there’s medium acidity with a touch of sweetness on the finish (pear juice). A rounder wine but doesn’t lack energy. For me a step down from the 2010 but still an excellent wine. Tasted at the Domaine. Decanted for 2.5 hours. Big rich nose of lemon, orchard fruit and fresh honey. Nose is rich but has so much citrus lift it seems almost elegant. Weighty and rich on the palate but has great tension and acidity. Extremely well balanced. The length of this wine is incredible. The lemon and spice flavours are layered and dense while the energetic and fresh profile keep everything in perfect balance. This is young and delicious and very complex. Can drink now or hold for another 20 years. The best white wine of the trip for me. Spectacular.

Pure and airy nose of lemon and other citrus fruits. Medium acidity on the palate with nice tension and a tart lime finish. This was quite nice but the finish was quite short and I’d hope for a bit more acidity considering the vintage. Very good.

From magnum (77/150). Lighter ruby colour, bricking near the rim. Bit weird on the nose, roasted or VA/chemical lifted note. Bitter finish, almost citrus/grapefruit tart on finish. Not sure what to make of this: eithers it’s an off bottle or an awful wine. I have no experience with this wine so no barometer to make that call.

Tasted at the Domaine. From half bottle. Nose showing some development along with touches of oxidized aromas (which wasn’t surprising as this half bottle had been opened several days before). Palate was pleasant with brighter red fruits, fine tannins and great acidity. The tannins were a touch drying. No rating as this probably isn’t a typical sample.

1999 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
(4/24/2013)
Tasted at the Domaine. From half bottle. Rustic and slightly ripe on the nose with a dark raspberry nose and hints of floral and iron. Very youthful on the palate with riper yet pure red pinot fruits and minerals. Fine yet firms tannins and good length. Needs another 5 year at least. Excellent. 92+
