Grape juicy, simple fruity, not much complexity, nothing else here. Meh.

Has that bold Aussie sweetness, yet is reverent to the Umbrian style. If they could pull back just a bit, they might really have something here.

Big sweet oak bomb. First sip is tasty but second sip is one too many. Disappointing.

Though the addition of Merlot to the blend softens this wine, removes that truly Sagrantinian bite on the finish, this wine is still pretty darn tasty. Red fruit, warm spices, chocolate.

Out of the new world Sagrantinos, this was the most Umbrian in profile. Big and bold, but tannic, with a rustic edge. Well done.

Rich, deep, complex. Dark and chocolatey. Big and sweet, but just on the edge of too much. The addition of cinsault takes this a little bit away from the classic Sagrantino profile, but still a tasty wine.

Over the top big sweet Aussie fruit bomb. Never would guess in a million years this is Sagrantino. Moving on...

So rubbery on the nose. Like being in a tire factory. Ouch. Very tannic, closed. Perhaps if this horrible funk blows off and it opens with time, maybe, but right now I'd have to say this is just flat out flawed.
BTW, my understanding is that this wine was aged in barrels that were originally used for white wines.

Huge bacon notes on the nose. Is this Syrah? Hermitage? Also hints of mint. The same on palate, alongside forest berry and cocoa. Rich and full, very powerful. Too powerful? Not sure this is true to Sagrantino di Montefalco, but it is tasty.

Young, but so pure and clean. These guys just get SdM! Mint, menthol on the nose, hint of salumi with air. On the palate, cherries, mint, cocoa, alive and tingly, huge acid and tannin. Needs time but it's a beauty.

Reductive nose, funky, but in a synthetic way. On the palate, too sweet, that Amarone-style that this producer seems to be going for. I can't say I like it, although it may appeal to some.

Nice funkiness on the nose, although a bit of rubber creeps in as well. Brooding, dark fruit, huge tannins, figs. Not a terrible effort, but not special either. Give it a few years and it should improve.

Barnyardy, even some poopy diaper on the nose. This is probably a turnoff to many but I dig it. Reminds me of Burgundy. (There's gotta be some brett here.) On the palate, chewy fruit, easy drinking, not as tannic or acidic as other SdMs. A bit of a letdown after the fun nose, which gets an extra and probably undeserved point from me.

Perfectly aged, wonderfully balanced, great mix of mature cheese, tobacco, chery fruit. A lovely wine. First word in my notes: "amazeballs"

Fuller body than the Grechetto, rounded out by Chard, still fresh, melon, pear, citrus.

Absolutely brilliant Montefalco Rosso. Definitely young, but complex, rich, yet not without elegance. Sagrantino plays a strong role, especially on the grippy finish, which showcases great acid and tannin. Lots of red fruit and chocolate. Would love to see this evolve over a few years.

Very rich, in fact the most intensely flavored SdM I've ever tasted. Good complexity. Big extraction here. Feels young still, tightly wound, despite the age. This was from a pop and pour and though it was expressive I would like to have seen it with some time. The negative for me was that it was a little too sweet, almost Amarone-like.

Certainly too young to show its best, especially p&p. That said, darker fruits, yet more elegant package than the reserve SdM. Tight, brooding, huge tannin at this point, not surprisingly. Mid palate seems a little thin. Potential here; I'd lay down 2-4 years before revisiting.

Best Umbrian white of the trip. So complex. Nose features star anise, floral and fruity notes. On the palate, flint mixes with citrus fruit. Softened by oak w/ a touch of vanilla. Evolves as you drink it. Very nice!

This is ready to drink, although it will certainly last for many more years. Tannins are well-integrated with notes of balsamic, dark cherry, chocolate. Always a well-made wine.

Is at the same time more elegant and more aggressive than the Collepiano. Fruit is lighter, bringing a black tea-like aspect to the mix, yet the tannins are more fierce, suggesting this needs a good 5 years on its side.

Big acid (almost seems tannic), citrus, nuts. Complex and alive. Reminds me of Pecorino from Piceno (Marche). Would be interesting to see this age.

Though good, it paled in comparison next to the '08. Tighter, more wound up, not as round or developed. Clearly this vintage was not as strong. Still, give this a couple years and it'll be decent.

2012 Antonelli San Marco Montefalco Rosso
Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Rosso
(9/16/2015)
My experience with Antonelli Montefalco Rossos is that they need a few years more than other Rossos. True to form, this was tight, tannic, and a little green. But I have little doubt it'll be great in 2-3 years, just like the '10 is right now.

Fruit-forward, all about the fruit, yet fiercely tannic on the back. Not my favorite Sagrantino wine, but an interesting one to try.

Lots of tipicity here, well made. Big cherry flavor, balsamic notes, chocolate on finish. Huge tannins at this point, and of course it could use a few years on its side before enjoying. Start drinking around 2018?

There were some reductive notes (burnt rubber) on p&p that were a bit of a turnoff for me, but with air, if these blow away, this should be a decent everyday red.

2006 Antonelli San Marco Montefalco Sagrantino Chiusa di Pannone 93 Points
Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Sagrantino
(9/16/2015)
There's a brighter red fruit to this SdM than with the regular Antonelli SdM bottlings. This single vineyard has a bit higher elevation, which could contribute, perhaps. Red cherries, anise, herbal notes. This '06 is more brooding, classic Sagrantino than the '07, and I think I liked it just a little better.

Similar to the '06, but a little lighter, more elegant, more floral, especially on the nose. Not as typical as the '06, but interesting and delicious.
