Introduction

A nice collection of wines that mostly need least 10 yrs of cellaring to fully integrate the wood treatment. Stars of the evening for me were '01 and '00 Rocce dell'Annunziata Riserva baroli -- both excellent in their own right and also completely unlike other wines in the line up and each other. As always, thank you Brad and Magda for bringing these treasures to NYC.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2000 Paolo Scavino Barolo Carobric

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Nose of ripe dark cherry. Dark ruby color, youthful and vibrant. Taste of cherry with a hint of mint. The wine is still tannic and is not even close to being ready. Wait.

  • 2010 Paolo Scavino Barolo Carobric

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Tannic and simply impenetrable wine at this time, revealing virtually nothing now about both the acclaimed vintage and the wine maker. Kept coming back to the glass throughout the evening, and could only tease out some basic floral notes. Put away for a decade or more. Really.

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 2001 Paolo Scavino Barolo Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

An amazing nose of lemon tart, fresh flowers, tea. Fully evolved, complex, and sensual wine. Tasting atypical for me notes of menthol cough candy, lemon drops, integrated oak, macerated cherries and cranberries. Mineral, long, and complex. A truly unique experience.

  • 2000 Paolo Scavino Barolo Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Concentrated, masculine, traditional and long barolo. Sweet, dark, extracted fruit -- mostly dusty black cherry -- is ripe, tangy and delicious now. Nose of dried roses and sweet tar completed the package. The fruit is extracted and forward; the wine finishes a touch shorter than I would have preferred. Both '00 and '01 Rocche are both remarkable, yet so different it is hard to believe they were made by the same hand.

  • 1990 Paolo Scavino Barolo Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Remarkably fresh wine that is just getting ready to drink. Vibrant red fruit, orange, spice, acidity on the palate. Pine aromatics are peaking out as well. The finish is little flat. Full bodied, fruit forward and complex. Drink now.
