2011 Barolo Tasting at La Festa del Barolo

Introduction

Each of the 15 producers poured one 2011 Barolo. These were all current releases (except the riserva from Scavino which can't be released until next year). All wines were opened around 9:30am. The tasting ran from 10:30am to 12:30am. The wines were served cellar temp.

  • 2011 Paolo Scavino Barolo Riserva Novantesimo 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    [2011 is the 90th anniversary of the founding of this winery by Enrico's father Paolo and his grandfather Lorenzo. In honor of this, they made this special blend from grapes in Fiasco (Castiglione Falletto), Monvigliero (Verduno), Cannubi and Vignane (Barolo), San Bernardo (Serralunga), Bricco Ambrogio (Roddi), and Rocche dell’Annunziata (La Morra).] Lovely, sweet, new oak nose. Sweet and a little simple at this stage, but very appealing. Some tannin. Medium length. It seems a bit shut down this morning. 92-??

  • 2011 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Tre Tine 95 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Muted red fruit and tar nose. Rich and expansive in the mouth. Gorgeous macerated cherries on the finish. A wow wine.

Closing

Based on this tasting, 2011 is a very good vintage that produced mostly very tasty, early drinking wines. They lack the structure that makes a vintage like 2010 a great vintage.
