Introduction

Very long day across 2 sessions in Tonny's restaurant
Really thanks to Alex who invited me to this, and all the guys (and ladies) who joined - a great, fun day

Flight 1 - Lunch - Chardonnay Corfefe (13 Notes)

Blind tasting, and some really interesting thing came out of it.
(Case in point, one participant who had been dissing the Leeuwin Art Series, actually chose it as his favourite - literally ate his words haha)

I also found my judgement totally mixed up... wrongly judging a Batard as an American... still not experienced enough...

But what an eye-opener

The Kistler was the voted wine of the afternoon, so everyone had to pay for their lunch :(

Flight 2 - Dinner - Red Wines (6 Notes)

The notes are not complete, and not in the standard systematic format - to which I apologise.
There were 3 more wines which I can't really remember the notes, so I chose to exclude.

However, I do have to say this lineup was one of the most impressive I had come across by far...

  • 2008 Thibault Liger-Belair Clos Vougeot 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

recall the colour as pale ruby, nose packed with red charries, plums and mushrooms, medium finish; pretty good wine, and best to drink now and not age any further

  • 2003 Maison Leroy Gevrey-Chambertin 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

yet again, I rated a Leroy down... perhaps my palate is not too attuned to their wines, pity... that aside, the colour was deep ruby, with mostly blackcurrant flavours, to the point I thought it was nothing much more than dry, alcoholic Ribena... minus points in the complexity department

  • 2001 Nicolas Potel Romanée St. Vivant 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

this one was good; clear, deep ruby; pronounced nose of cherries, blackberries, and some tertiary characteristics of tar, ceadr and meats; also had similar congruent flavours on the palate, finished long; can expect more good years to come from this

  • 1994 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 98 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

this was my wine of the night! in fact, while I was initially hesitant by many reviews of this wine getting past its peak, its performance during the dinner surprised me! very well balanced in cherries, blackberries, plums, herbs, and cedar both on the nose and palate; felt really like a great fine wine at its very best; definitely won't recommend to age further, do drink up all of this nectar in your cellars within the next year - it'll be a pity to see it slide

  • 2010 Woodstock Shiraz The Stocks 96 Points

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

still, like the previous bottle, it showed intense power and flavours, of black fruits and toasty coffee and chocolates, jointly ranked this 2nd with the DRC

  • 2003 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

to give this one justice, I try to remember as much as I can from that drunken night. this really punched above most of the rest (sans the Hermitage, but that's just me). complex flavours of red cherries, plums and blackcurrant, and with fresh thyme herbs, mushrooms, chacuterie, graphite and forest floor; one can only imagine what the perfect Burgundian can be like. really enjoyed this bottle. and yes, my virgin DRC :)

Closing

Ended up so sloshed, and even had some alcohol amnesia, and struggling to remember the reds that I tasted in the evening.
Was well worth it given the excellent wines put up!
Will be a long while before I allow myself to get so over-indulgent again
