Nose is far quieter and shut down relative to the ‘05 in the next glass. Coaxing gives some secondary aromatics and earth. Dark fruit palate. Black liquorice.
Most expressive nose out of the first flight (‘05 - ‘01) with bright red cherry, blue fruit, but with pleasant earth influence showing already. Energetic. Perfumed and elegant but the palate has punchy red fruit and great structure. Pleasantly surprised by how showy and approachable this is.
On the nose the ‘00 is showing less secondary aromatics and soil influence than the ‘01 in the last flight. This is darker and a little more built up. Palate has nice red berry juice with good structure. Still fleshy.
Blue and red berry fruit on the nose, not overly expressive, some spice but no soil. Nose is better when you come back to it after a little bit. Big on the palate with grip remaining on the tannin. Tougher and less pleasurable than ‘97 and ‘00 in the same flight.
Pleasant rusticity on the nose above spiced red berry fruit. Ripe perfume. Palate is still bold with red and black fruit. Nicely resolved. A degree More spice in the ‘97 than any of the other vintages thus far.
Lovely nose that is intricate and has soily earth influence, black teas, and trace brett above developed red berry fruit. Mature palate that still has sweet fruit with rustic and even animal character. Much more showy than the ‘90, surprisingly. Well balanced and delicious drinking.
Nose is darker and less expressive than that on the ‘95 in the next glass and is showing more black fruit with tar and ash. Given the vibrancy in the ‘95 there could actually be something a touch off here. Palate has robust and spicy black fruit and seems to be just showing young overall. Dark teas.
Rustic and secondary aromatics, soil, spice, leathery cranberry fruit. Maybe the faintest taint of cork in here, but hard to say for sure as it is an old Italian after all and the '89 in the next glass is super corked. Palate is similarly rustic but the fruit still has good juice behind it. Good acid, drinks well with dinner.
Beautiful nose that has cool red berry fruit and only mild rusticity and earth influence showing. Whereas the ‘85 in the next glass is rustic and quite dusty, this is lush relatively. Plate here has great juice to the fruit. Lush but also with good development and secondary flavors.
Markedly lighter in color than the ‘82 and ‘85 in the same flight. The nose is on a different program as well with a spectacular bouquet of smoked meat and drying rose petals. Both sweet and savory and very intriguing. Guests at the table are giving notes comparable to Heitz Martha with mint and chocolate. The palate is also both sweet and savory and has rare meats chocolate covered black cherries. Now we're talking.
Gorgeous nose that has sweet cherry and strawberry fruit with pronounced smoke and rustic earth. Still fresh and vibrant. Highly expressive. Surprised by how pure and fresh this is. Palate still has a wallop of red fruit up front but melts into a flavorful but texturally silky mouthful.
Curious nose, sort of like a really great flour tortilla. Warm strawberry fruit, sort of mushy. Unduly funky, and I usually really like funky old Italians. Palate is tired and quickly finishes with sharp acid. Nothing compared to the '74 and '71 unfortunately.
Spectacular nose that even exceeds that on the ‘71 Sori Tilden in the same flight. Soft strawberry fruit, mild smoke, and pleasant soil influence. Totally Burgundian in terms of layers of spice, smoke, and nuanced red and black fruit. On the palate this has soft black tea and sweet red fruit. Very good but a click less moving than the nose alone promises. With more time this '71 and the Sori Tilden become more similar on the palate. Both fantastic, but the straight Barbaresco takes wine of the night for this guy.
Distinct Italian spice and tar. Intriguing and and expressive, but not nearly as dynamic as the nose on either of the ‘71s. Developing some maple. Palate is more striking and lively than the tertiary nose suggests and provides a flavorful and structured mouthful.

Vibrant nose, bright red cherries, new oak quite evident. Dense. Boulder minerality. Lush but oaked fruit palate. Fleshy.
