Introduction

We all brought 1 - 3 bottles.
The wines were tasted blind. The owner of the restaurant decided about the line-up.

Flight 1 - Champagne (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - Dry White (4 Notes)

Flight 3 - 2004 Bordeaux (33 Notes)

  • 2004 Château Pape Clément 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Creamy black fruits, beautiful oak and just a slight touch of bell peppers in the bouquet. On the palate a lot of dark forest fruits, creamy tannin, a touch of bell pepper as well and a firm amount of good acidity. In fact this wine is still a few years too young. Wait until 2017+. For now I scored the wine 91+

  • 2004 Château Smith Haut Lafitte 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

A very luxurious bouquet with toasted oak, cigar box, smoke and ripe black fruits. Same on the palate. Creamy and round tannin which altogether makes the wine delicious already. No problem keeping this until 2020.

  • 2004 Château Clerc Milon 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

The bouquet is a bit reticent, but it shows cassis and other dark forest fruits, cedar and potential. On the palate it is the same story; too young. Also a bit green bell pepper. Waiting with this wine until at least 2017 will be rewarding. For now only 90++

  • 2004 Château Lafite Rothschild 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Luxurious bouquet with vanilla and creamy dark fruits, but not really expressive. Same on the palate. Cassis, firm acidity, round tannin with a bite and also some bell peppers. The wine is not really showing off now, but I think there is potential; also considering my note from 2007. Blind score only 91 for now.

  • 2004 Château Hosanna 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Bouquet with red fruits, salty licorice and some bell pepper. On the palate juicy red as well as dark fruits, beautiful oak, but also some edgy bell pepper impressions. Needs a few more years of ageing possibly. Around 2017?

  • 2004 Château L'Eglise-Clinet 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Beautiful bouquet with black fruits, vanilla, smoke etc. On the palate concentrated dark fruits, a beautiful balance between sweetness and acidity and round and soft tannin with enough promise for the future. A beautiful and luxurious wine. Early maturity now and will still be lovely around 2020+

  • 2004 Château Sociando-Mallet 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Cassis, leather, graphite and luxurious oak in the bouquet. Black fruits on the palate as well. Nice balance between acidity and sweetness. Round tannin, but also (still) some bell pepper. Is starting to show itself, and around 2015 this will be ready. 90+

  • 2004 Château Monbousquet 93 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Dark fruits and exclusive smoky oak in the bouquet. On the palate creamy and round with red as well as black forest fruits, sweet spices like cinnamon, cocoa, soft and powdery tannin. Evolves beautifully with some more air. Extremely beautiful wine.

  • 2004 Château Cos d'Estournel 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Cassis and some green bell peppers in the bouquet. On the palate however juicy cassis, a good balance between acidity and sweetness and good tannin with a bite. Ok concentration. Needs a few more years of ageing. Around 2017?

  • 2004 Château Montrose 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Beautiful and a bit rustic bouquet with dark forest fruits and smoky oak. On the palate juicy fruits, some vanilla and other sweet spices. Quite expressive and with a firm dose of alcohol. Possibly the wine did not get enough time to breathe, because -although it was beautiful- for Montrose it was a bit disappointing.

  • 2004 Château Rauzan-Ségla 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Fairly elegant bouquet with good cassis and luxurious oak. On the palate still a bit reticent. Cassis, vanilla, sticky tannin and bitterness in the finish. Lacks some refinement in this stage. Wait until 2017-2019+. 89+

  • 2004 Château La Mission Haut-Brion 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

The bouquet is reticent showing dark fruits and luxurious oak. On the palate juicy cassis and other dark forest fruits. Full bodied and complex with good acidity and grainy tannin. Needs another 4+ years to show more finesse. 90++

  • 2004 Château Quinault L'Enclos Flawed

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Unfortunately the wine is slightly corked in the bouquet and worse on the palate. The structure seems to be ok, but no further notes.

  • 2004 Château Giscours 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Although the bouquet is still a bit reticent there are black forest fruits and elegant and luxurious oak, cedar, etc. Same on the palate. Very tempting. A lot of sweetness balanced by beautiful acidity. A complex and luxurious wine. Early maturity now and in a year or 2 - 4 at its peak.

  • 2004 Château Lascombes 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Concentrated and luxurious bouquet with beautiful cassis and smoky oak. Same on the palate, also the smokiness. Beautiful balance between the acidity and quite much sweetness. • 2004 Château Le Bon Pasteur 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Beautiful bouquet with creamy dark fruits and beautiful oak. Same on the palate. Good balance between sweetness and acidity and a bit dusty tannin with still a good bite. The wine is still a bit locked, but it did not get that much airtime. Modern made and probably best between 2015 and 2019.

  • 2004 Château Lafon-Rochet

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

This wine is completely locked in both the bouquet as on the palate. Dark fruits alright, but for the rest a lot of sticky tannin and bitterness. If I would have any I would wait at least until 2018 before trying again. There is potential. I did not score the wine.

  • 2004 Château Palmer 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Beautiful bouquet with cassis and other dark forest fruits, cedar, luxurious oak and chocolate. On the palate a slightly sweet start with dark fruits, beautiful smoky oak, high concentration and just a little bell pepper. The tannin is still very youthful. This is a luxurious and classical wine, already showing what it has in store, and from 2018 onwards this will be great. 94+

Beautiful bouquet with dark forest fruits, beautiful oak and almost some perfume. On the palate ripe dark fruits, a beautiful balance between sweetness and acidity and beautiful still a bit sticky tannin. Complex and elegant wine in its very early maturity stage now and probably showing more finesse and complexity around 2018 and the decade after that. Beautiful wine. 93++

  • 2004 Château Haut-Bailly 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

The bouquet is still reticent, but there is concentrated cassis and beautiful oak. In the mouth reticent as well with also dark cassis juice, firm acidity and powerful tannin. Probably wise to wait until 2018 before opening. It will be rewarding to wait. 91++ for now.

  • 2004 Château La Conseillante 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

In the bouquet ripe dark fruits like cassis, cedar and beautiful oak. On the palate dark fruits as well, butterscotch, beautiful acidity and although very pleasurable already still a bit too young. The tannin is round, open and still powerful. From 2017 onwards? 92+

  • 2004 Château Calon-Ségur

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Reticent bouquet with cassis and beautiful oak. In the mouth the oak is the first impression, followed by dark fruits a lot of acidity and bell peppers. There is luxury and potential, but this wine is still much too young. I did not score the wine this time and I just read my note from 2007. I was probably correct then already; drink around 2018 or later. There is potential for a score above 90.

  • 2004 Vieux Château Certan 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

This wine is in a drinking stage which I do not appreciate much. The bouquet is still extremely youthful with lactic impressions and raspberries. Same on the palate with a lot of acidity and cherries. The use of oak is beautiful and there is potential, but for tonight I just scored the wine 90+

  • 2004 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

The bouquet is luxurious, but still showing lactic impressions. On the palate concentrated juice with dark as well as red forest fruits, a lot of good acidity, bell pepper and sticky tannin. I wrote down a luxurious youthful monster. When this starts to show its finesse it will probably be great, but for now only 91 and possibly potential for 94+. Do not drink before 2019.

  • 2004 Château Lafleur 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Finally a Lafleur which was not corked…… And if it is not corked, it is a great wine! Beautiful and luxurious, creamy bouquet. A mouth full of beautiful wine with beautiful fruits, soft and powdery tannin. Great complexity and very lovely with great finesse and complexity. So round. A beauty already and with a great future.

Beautiful bouquet with ripe black forest fruits and luxurious smoky oak and leather. On the palate also lush dark fruits, sweet spices, beautiful acidity and soft tannin. Great length. • 2004 Château Latour Grand Vin 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

The bouquet has concentrated black forest fruits and cherries, coffee, graphite and luxurious oak. On the palate the wine is still extremely youthful with good cherries, dark fruits, vanilla, good acidity and round but powerful tannin. Great complexity. The wine already shows what it has in store, but will continue to improve for the better over the next 7 years or so. Will be great around 2020 - 2025+.
