Introduction

Great night with our MW guest-of-honour Matthew Hemming whom generously shared his knowledge. Notes from other serial CT experts Pavel, Jason and Dibbs so take mine with a pinch of salt!

Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 2014 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Petit Chablis 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis, Petit Chablis

Easy guess as Dauvissat from the wax capsule and the high acidity. Commented that this had an expensive nose but felt the palate lacked weight. Some said GC but thought weak 1er at best. Still good though and showed why one should only buy wax capsule bottles from Dauvissat.

  • 2016 Domaine Dujac Morey St. Denis 1er Cru 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

Wonderful, lifted nose with delicate, sweet red fruit so went for 2015 Chambolle. Lovely balance to this wine, similar to the 08 CDLR I tried last month but was so red-fruited that I wasn’t in MSD territory at all. No signs of stems or blue fruit. Obviously still young and a long way to go but superb already.

  • 2013 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Boudriotte Rouge 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Light, delicate red fruit. So sensual and silky that I would have guessed CDN. Drinking at peak now. Another red Ramonet winner, so much more consistent than his whites.

  • 1995 Domaine Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Guessed 1995 at first but thought the fruit was fading so went for an older, weaker year like 1991 or 1992. Some coffee, iron notes that made it clear that it was a Gevrey. Cloudy, not quite clean, receding dark red fruit. Think that they’re making better wines today.

  • 1986 Château Lynch-Bages 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Guessed 1995 left bank. Some greenness, still quite tannic and unresolved, not sure if the fruit will outlast the tannin. A Bordeaux with hard edges that might not ever soften.

  • 1990 Château Lynch-Bages 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very similar to the 1986, but with more vibrant fruit that made it an obvious guess as 1989/90. Felt like this didn’t get out of second gear, not as exciting as the bottle a few months ago.

  • 1988 Vieux Château Certan 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Think everyone including me was surprised turned out to be a left-bank. Old-school greenness, liked the elegance and silky dark red fruit which made me land on VCC as the producer. Another Bordeaux where everyone guessed younger than 1990 but guessed 1985 because they always turn out to be indestructible. Love these classic Bordeaux.

  • 2010 Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino 94 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Producer got accidentally revealed but thought this was a 2010 or 2008 with the supreme balance that the wine had. Focused, precise dark red fruit, but at the same time ethereal and pretty. Much more impressive than the 2013 that I tried a couple of weeks ago. Lots of upside to this to go beyond 94.

  • 2013 Gaja Barolo Conteisa 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Much lighter, prettier red fruit than I expected of Gaja - I thought it would be dominated by oak and dark fruit. Quite Burgundian and surprisingly ready for a 2013 Barolo, very good.

  • 1990 Elio Altare Langhe Barbera Vigna Larigi 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Wow wouldn’t have placed this as a 1990 or Barbera. Apparently Altare wanted to build this like a Bordeaux and could see why, definitely saw more similarities to a right bank than Nebbiolo.

  • 2015 Lorenzo Accomasso Barbera d'Alba Pochi Filagn 88 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba

My extra. Opened at lunchtime for dinner. Still young and primary, quite modern in style surprisingly for the producer. Dark, extracted with prominent alcohol. Had a strange menthol note too. The MW showed his chops by nailing this as a Barbera immediately.

  • 2005 Luis Pato Vinha Velha Vinha Barrosa 90 Points

    Portugal, Beiras, Vinho Regional Beiras

Another wine that was cloudy and not quite clean. Sweet fruit with tar and a tannic bite that led everyone to guess Nebbiolo. Wasn’t out of place in the line-up today.

  • 1998 Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée Spéciale La Tourtine 89 Points

    France, Provence, Bandol

My contribution. Opened at lunchtime for dinner. Guesses were mostly in Syrah, someone impressively said if it that was the case it could only be Bandol because of the B-theme. Quite tannic and lacked fruit when opened, but achieved better balance with air. Old-school, hard-nosed wine with brett, not as exciting as I thought a Peyraud era wine would be.
