Introduction

Decanter's annual fine wine tasting. Due to transport problems arrived a little later than planned so missed a few wines I was planning to try but still some stars.

Flight 1 - Argentina (7 Notes)

The O Fournier's were good again, shame they're not in HK!

Flight 2 - South Africa (13 Notes)

Morgenstar was interesting and one to watch. The Rubicon 01 again didn't disappoint.

Flight 3 - Californian (8 Notes)

The Diamond Creek's were head and shoulders above most of the wines tasted.

Flight 4 - Decanter Award Winners (2 Notes)

These didn't shine as much as expected.

Flight 5 - Masterclass Tasting with Jean Guillame Pratts (12 Notes)

A great tasting, although a little hurried. The 00 disappointed and the 01 was the hidden gem.

  • 2006 Les Pagodes de Cos 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Red with just a hint of blue, lighter than I expected. Nose has a hint of fish meal, some blackcurrant, some herbs. Blackcurrant comes through on a light palate. Slight tannins on fininsh which it struggles to carry.

  • 2006 Château Cos d'Estournel 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Red colour with a hint of blue. More intensity than the 06 Pagodes. Oak comes through on the nose. Palate is tight, slight dryness - intensity on finish

  • 2005 Château Cos d'Estournel 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Deep colour, slight mauve on rim with a orange tinge on the core. A good underhint of green pepper and black fruit. This filled out and softened up after an hour. The palate was a little dumb to start but wakes up with some spice. Intensity builds through finish after a little lean spot. \

This filled out, improved a lot after 1 hour. Fruit came through, subtle balanced and refined.

    Started as a 92 but opened to a 94

  • 2004 Château Cos d'Estournel 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Dark core, purple rim. Nose has a little of the 'curry' and also the fish meal again. Palate is a little short. Curry comes through with small tannins.

  • 2003 Château Cos d'Estournel 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Port like colour. Expressive nose. Rounded blackcurrant, some menthal. Just the faintest oak and later licquorice. An intense palate, blackcurrant comes through. A little spice on the finish, tannins are there but well supported.

  • 2002 Château Cos d'Estournel 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Deep dark red, almost black. A little cigar smoke on the nose, small berried. Hint of curry again. Palate has surprising intensity. Some spice on a little short finish - almost watery.

  • 2001 Château Cos d'Estournel 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Deep dark red, clear rim. Nose is starting to show age with secondary notes. Cedar and green pepper. Palate has strength and great balance. Finish still has some blackcurrant and integrated tannins. This was probably the surprise of the tasting.

  • 2000 Château Cos d'Estournel 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Colour still has some purple. Nose is lean, metalic pepper, little fruit. Some blackcurrant comes trhough but still flat. Finish has some life but not enough to carry it at this time.

  • 1995 Château Cos d'Estournel 91 Points

  • 2006 Château Cos d'Estournel Blanc 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux

Very bright, clean with a hint of straw colour, it also has a metalic sheen. Intense nose, straw, minerally. Perhaps a little oil at the end. Lemony, grapefruit and a little plumpness. Intensity comes through on palate as well as a pomelo.

Closing

The Cos tasting was a great experience with the 03 and 05 taking WOTD and the 01 being the suprise. The Diamond Creek wines were also stand out within the tasting, if a little expensive.
