My kids were complaining in London today because they had to wear gloves when we went for a bike ride because it was "a bit chilly".

I said "Do you know how cold 0 degrees Kelvin is?"
Yes
"Well, that is how cold it is in the US right now. So stop moaning"

22F here this morning with a wind chill advisory (9F).
4 days after the event we still have a significant amount of snow on the ground, including all shady roads.
Some roads are still closed; the airport just reopened this morning.
I've never seen anything like it here.

Warmer weather is blowing into Chicago right now, so the warm up is headed east. Currently 15 degrees and very windy. Not exactly good running weather.

Last night in the mid-50s.

Rained all night.

This morning, it's down to 20°F (-6.7°C) so all that moisture has frozen. And temps will be down to 15°F (-9.4°C) by late afternoon.

I'm not going anywhere, because it's:

"Ice, ice, baby…"

Weather is REALLY cooling down It's going to hit a high of 67 today in Del Mar and a low of 54. I'll need a heavy sweatshirt tonight. Tomorrow we'll have a high of 76 degrees. There goes the sweatshirt

37? That's a heat wave up North for January or February!

Oh I know. I was just in N.Y. last Sunday through Tuesday. Tuesday was ok, but Sunday and Monday were brutal. AND I left my hat in my Uber from the airport.

Woke up to 16°F (-8.9°C), which was as warm as it is going to be today.

Frigid.

Wind chill advisory in Chas.
The last time we had a winter like this, we sold our house so we could buy an escape in FL.

They're reporting 25F here! Not good for a backyard full of tropical plants.

I keep a Hibiscus, a Shefflera, a Monstera, and several Bird of Paradise plants on my patio all summer. The Schefflera and the Monstera are more than 30 years old.
I'll keep them outdoors until the first freezing overnight temperatures but they never have to see a hard frost.
I put them in the basement near an eastern facing sliding glass door where the temp ranges from 45-55 thru winter.

I picked a Hibiscus flower for my wife yesterday morning, and the Birds of Paradise are getting set to flower soon.

Tropical plants in the ground can probably withstand a bit more overnight cold as long as it's isolated, and they're not either flowering or fruiting.

My brother in Tampa was scrambling to get succulents & orchids into the garage to shield them from the 28°F they were getting.
