Just finished the latest Stuart Woods, Unbound.

His stuff is a true brain vacation, formula novels. There is a place for that.

On to another novel now, Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate. Recommended by several sources, so we will see.

Bibliophile Cheers!

Finished it a few weeks ago. It was alright.

Been reading some Frederik Backman (My Grandmother Told Me To Tell You She's Sorry, Britt-Marie Was Here). Highly recommend.

I’m reading a compilation book called “Everyday Drinking.” It’s by a late British columnist who enjoyed wine and mixed drinks. It has funny anecdotes and is highly opinionated. Good read and not necessary to speed read.

You Think It, I'll Say It by Curtis Sittenfield. A collection of short stories. Not bad.

May look into her novels as well.

“Before We Were Yours” by Lisa Wingate. Fictional work set against the historic backdrop of the Tennessee Children’s Home Society scandal. The fictional sisters and brother woven into this story line were completely believable and well constructed against this historical setting. Good book. Easy and quick read.

Wingate book also read recently. The Sittenfield is short, amusing, but does have some political undertones. I'm just sayin' in case you care to avoid that type of writing. She is a skilled writer and I may pick up one of her novels as the library has several.

Current tome: Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway. Not at all lighthearted nor amusing, but da$$ that man can write.

Bibliophile Cheers!

Political undertones don't bother me PP. Matter of fact, I'll read just about anything. Little bothers me.

I just finished "American Pastoral" by Phillip Roth. Jeez, there is a lot going on in that book. I need to make another trip to the wine cellar to clear my head.

When he passed recently I but that book on my To-Read list. I'm guessing you're recommending it albeit a real mind bender?

Most of his works fall into that category--both recommended and mind benders. It's been a number of years since I read any of his works, but I found all of the ones I read to be compelling.

WIML - Yes, it is definitely a recommend from me. Roth was able to take a single event and explore it from each characters perspective and include the historical influences that brought that character to the moment of the event and then the impact on lives going forward.

I live a simple life and it is an eye opener to see how complicated a simple event can be if you want it to be.

“True Colors” by Kristin Hannah. Seemed a bit formulated as in following the "Kristin Hannah formula" as I'll dub it but it had an interesting enough background of ranching, horses, growing up in a small town where everybody is in your business, etc...to keep me interested. Definitely more of a “Chick Lit” kind of a story than her recent novels that I enjoyed more but it kept me entertained for four days.

Rescued from page 3.

“A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership.” by James Comey. Interesting read. Nothing new to learn here if you’ve been well versed on current events over the past couple of years. No ground breaking secrets. Just a good synopsis from Comey’s point of view. Good background on what shaped him as an individual. I enjoyed reading it in about 48 hours but I am glad I waited for it from the library. No need to add it to your library in my humble opinion. Sorry James.

The Punishment She Deserves by Elizabeth George. A fav author. She is so talented at character development. At 690 pages, this will take a while but it's worth it.

The Outsider by Stephen King. This is seriously good, and makes me think of his skill in writing some of his earlier complex novels.

Tom, agreed on King's talent - more than he's often given credit for. I really liked his On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft as well.

“The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien. Interesting read. I call it “read” because it isn’t quite a novel, not quite a collection of short stories. It’s more like a recollection of memories woven together across three distinct time frames of the characters in the book: their time in Vietnam, their childhood and two decades after they returned from Vietnam. Unusual format that incredibly reads easily and well. I enjoyed it.

Just began I Hear She's a Real Bi$$$ by Jen Agg. She is a Toronto restauranteur and this is her memoir. So far very funny and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the hospitality industry. A more lighthearted read suited to warm weather.

Please note that while she writes well, it is one of those books where every other word, it seems, is the f-bomb. IMHO, not needed to make her point. Reminds me of an awful movie I saw once, Glengarry Glen Ross. I'm no prude, but gratuitous vulgarity or violence is a turnoff.

The Woman in the Window by AJ Finn. Very suspenseful, not suitable for me to read late at night. Finished in 4 days.

On to a lighter novel. The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand.

I finished two of the three books in Rachel Cusk's trilogy -- really excellent books. Beautifully written. Not for those looking for strong plot lines. Just a wonderful read and written in a beautiful way.

Reading now an autobiography of a British politician -- Christopher Patten. Reminds me how the British are better at these than most Americans. Some interesting insights -- though some of the intricacies of British political issues of the time escape me; still a pretty good read so far.

Also just got from the library Allen Drury's Senate Journal 1943-1945, written in 1963. I had read somewhere that it was one of the classic books on the US Senate, so looking forward to it. Will post on this again if I find it worth recommending.

Looked up The Woman in the Window recommended by PP -- might try that. Sounds like it is quite good, but have too much on the deck at the moment to buy it! And my own book is just coming out so I have to spend time peddling that -- hint, hint.

Tasting the past : the science of flavor & the search for the original wine grapes. By Kevin Begos, 2018.

If you are an ancient history buff and an oenophile this may be a great read. Working my geeky way through it.

“Less” by Andrew Sean Greer. Funny book. Not rip roaring funny as others have posted online but humorous and quite entertaining. Quick and easy read.

I'm quite surprised to find no mention of Corkscrew by Peter Stafford-Bow anywhere here. It is wine-related, and extremely funny (it's also based in the UK, and I guess it would help to have some knowledge of the UK and its wine & retail scene). The concept of the Minstrels of Wine is brilliant.
