Late night drink with J at home. From 375ml bottle. Drank over 1.5 hours. Drank in Sydonios Meridional.
Appearance is clear, very deep opaque intensity, dark purple colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of toasty vanilla oak, sweet oak spices, deep blackcurrant, creme de cassis, licorice, black tar asphalt, black pepper. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (14.8%), very smooth velvety high tannins, very full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of black tar asphalt, black licorice, creme de cassis, blackcurrant, blackberries, sweet spices, purple sage herb. Strangely the finish doesn't come up as long as expected, more like medium+ only. Maybe because it is so smooooth?
Very very good quality. Still super fresh and lots of inherent power feels.
65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 15% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot. Sage Mountain Vineyard.

The wine really impressed me but I wondered about the ABV it felt really in check though obviously quite high.
My UK bottle says 15.5% and given the 1% tolerance the US allows it maybe 15.5 or a touch more.
It’s quite heady but incredible drive and energy

Interesting and wonder where it’s going as still young.
Some density and plenty of fruit.
Still quite grippy and tannic, couple of hours eases some of it but still feels fresher and lighter than perhaps it is.
Slight green elements in nose and finish like a Bordeaux blend.

Ticking upwards since last bottle. Dry finish , sweeter core coming through , gently developed nose - really enjoyable

If you have more than one bottle I’d open one now see what you think - could be its in perfect spot
I’m finding the 04s about now are great but will last longer

This is lovely and very much approachable- very much Sonoma coast on the nose - loads of sweet fruit on the palate and a bright mid. Good energy and zip
Very enjoyable

Love the Hefner Chard - Excellent
The Zin is a bit ripe but ok
The Pinot very good , if not quite top tier stuff - really good value, great wines
I’m about to go back and get more 2017 and 19s from them as only had 12 bottles
Quite impressed and enjoy the wines

Lovely light colour. Nose is spectacular, Chambolle meets Sonoma Pinot. Raspberry , strawberry
A great wine but there is no getting away from the 15% alcohol which does come through a bit too much. Knocked off at least 2-3 points for that
Time maybe will settle . Very much reminiscent of a Raen Pinot but with much more alcohol

    2/26/2023 12:05:00 PM - Lightly chilled - maybe 16 + to start with
Warner it gets the more apparent the alcohol - sure it will be fine - The 2018 Landi version with 14.5% was stunning

Wimps Vendredi Gras - Covington; 2/24/2023-2/25/2023 (La Trompette): A producer I know nothing about, and when my fellow diner kept on talking about this as their "entry level" I was evidently being, if not lied to, misled somewhat. Served from magnum - evidently it was not sold in any other format, this was just great. A hint of brett, just enough to bring some excitement, and a lovely savoury character, super acidity - it's not trying to be northern rhone but thrilling like good syrah can be. A real treat.

2/26/2023 10:31:00 AM - Maybe not entry level but the idea was to release at a lower price as a “thank you to customers “ a review reads
Vinous say it’s $175 on release but sells for almost double on market

Paired well with really nice bouillabaisse from Bastille. Not exactly as I was expecting but still pretty nice. Was expecting a real steely lemony SB but this must see some oak and fair amount of malolactic as it carries a smoky note and doesn’t have the jarring acidity. That said it’s got this smooth thing going on - more in chard camp I guess - that works well and was a great balance for the spiciness of the food.

  • Comment posted by Mbad77:

9/24/2022 9:30:00 AM - Drinking my first bottle now and it’s certainly rather unique. It does have that creamy texture but actually has no Malolactic at all. 36 hours skin contact apparently to gain extra richness and depth.

Initially easy to point out it’s a rich and sweet US wine and it is that but has more about it.
Certainly had tannins and structure to show up well for years. Maybe slightly disjointed at the moment but has ripe Rhône elements and I think will age brilliantly.
5-10 years and maybe will have lost some of the obvious sweetness and fruit and will be better for it yet is enjoyable right now . Pretty good.
Lots of big chunky sediment.

Really good wine with rather fresh element. Black current and juicy fruit with a cooler sappy fresh element. Little bit of grip but drinking well now with a softer edge.
Good with food but very approachable.
Reminds me a little of a cooler climate Syrah

No notes taken and had at a lunch from Magnum as all the 98s are. Lovely nose, fresh, lively palate with lots of acid and zip. Over time opens up with further richness on the nose. Excellent and in a 94-95 ballpark for me. No rush to drink. Believe this was a relatively recent release but couldn’t see any details on label.

12/11/2021 10:05:00 AM - Great - Thanks for that. I’ll look for the lot code next time stamped onto neck as saw nothing on back label or anywhere else but that’s very helpful. So this probably was a 2018/19 release
I have a few more in storage so will check.

Insane nose and explosive palate. After some time calms down and would like to sit with a bottle rather than the glass or so we had at lunch. It’s a little nuts but I liked it.

Score may be a touch on mean side but this is a tricky one. Had a bottle maybe 2 years ago which was filled with promise so thought this may be ideal timing but honestly I think it needs a few more years ideally.
It’s quite big with good tannins and acidity but isn’t rich. First half bottle it really did show some heat / alcoholic almost prune characteristics on the finish.

Kept until next day and had really integrated and softened though still had spice and power on finish.
Slightly grainy / chalky on finish with some grip.
Give it a proper aeriation / decant but this will go the ages and will be better for time in bottle.

  • Comment posted by Mbad77:

1/26/2020 9:04:00 AM - Yes thanks - I’m sure your right and wouldn’t dream of drinking a Bordeaux until 12 + like you say. Given it’s a Cali second wine I thought it would be about ready (Dominus I leave for longer) has plenty about this to leave for some time.
