Clean oxidized sherry nose; incredibly sweet wine; viscous & syrupy with a little heat on the mid palate; long sweet finish; sweeter than the tuxedo cake dessert but good.

Wow, this is sweet. So sweet it is almost over powering. *You need to have this with the right foods and it probably then is exceptional, so you can get past the huge sugar load. I'm guessing some sharp cheese, some fruit or nuts will balance this, but I need to look into this.

This was a fantastic wine. It should sell for about $55 or so. It is right on par with the 1910 Alvear PX Sherry which I opened last year. It was a clear brown color and so thick you almost had to chew it instead of drink it. Gripping acidity. Intense almond, raisin and honey notes. Wonderful complexity and a rich long finish. The remarkable thing about this wine is how fresh it tasted despite its intense and concentrated profile. 96 points.

A truly unique experience. Unlike any dessert wine I have ever had (I must look for aged PX sherry's more). 13% alcohol. Clear copperish brown color. Nose of stewed fruit. Heavy raisin notes with hints of malted milk balls and dried plums. Sweet, smooth and richly intense. A huge creamy finish that unfolded on the palate. This wine possessed the richness of a fine vintage Port but unlike the heavy alcoholic finish often present in a Port, this magnificent sherry was delicate, light and airy. A real treat. 96 points.

Thick and unctuous. It had dominating raisin notes with some honey and prune thrown in. Sweet without being cloying. Sherry is not known for its acidity. 92.

A beautiful copper/bronze in color, the nose is packed full of raisons, figs, honey and tea. The palate is the viscosity of motor oil, but there's a fine balance here (for PX), better than the 2000 vintage. Super-rich flavours of honey, raisons, prunes, figs and oranges explode in the mouth, and the finish lasts for over 45 seconds. Wow, this is an amazing, unique wine (no one else makes a vintage dated style of PX) at an outstanding price (A).
N.B. 'A' equates to a range of 93-96 for me.

Golden light brown with a viscousity that I have not seen before, granted this is my first PX. Brown sugar with dried apricot and dare I say mango? Maple syrup maybe cherries, peaches baked with cinnamon and a strange ethereal overtone of salt air. Heavy, Heavy, did I mention heavy? Thick like maple syrup with a sweetness that lingers on and on and on and on....Cinnamon, fresh coffee, carmel, baked fruit(both peaches and apricots) and toffee. What I'm not getting is any nuttiness, but maybe a light oak. My mind wants to put nuts into it but my palate says no. Strong acidity throughout and a strange Honeydew flavor that comes through on the finish. Wow...interesting, not one dimensional at all, like many heavy stickies tend to be. I won't rate this till I have more, and while this is on the low end pricewise for PX's I can't imagine what better tastes like! YUM!

The Great Terroirs of Domaine Zind Humbrecht (Raleigh, NC): What a great end to the evening! This is believed to be a single vintage wine from 175 years ago. Dark and thick as motor oil, a swirl stained the glass with a brownish film that had you wondering if the glass would ever look clear again. Ultra-rich and concentrated this was something wonderful, but also something that you could only drink a small amount of. Incredibly smooth and low in alcohol ( 10% ).To say this was glyceral is a vast understatement. Toffee, caramel, maple syrup, coffee and chocolate all attack your senses. A perfect ending to a perfect evening! 50+13+15+9+9 = 96

This is everything Parker says in his note. What a great drink. This was followed at Pablo and Roxie's dinner by a 1966 Fonseca, and imho it buy it off the table. Thanks Geoff for turning me on to this wine -- and ferreting outthe last few bottles from the cold room . I'm going to enjoy this one for years to come

I didn't like it as much as the 1971 Don PX, but this is a solid perfomer. Lighter molasses color with a nose of nuts, burnt sugar, raisins. Thick and tasty, with a good 30 sec. or more finish.

Medium brown in color with lovely copper and orange tints. Prunes, alcohol, tar and orange zest notes of the nose. The alcohol notes disappeared on the palate, which was extremely smooth and rich, though not very complex, with mainly prunes and raisons. The character that really elevates this wine, though, is its elegance - it's hard for a PX to be elegant, as it's so thick and rich (the consistency of motor oil), but this wine manages it. Much less viscous than the Alvear vintage dated wines, this shows the greater age of the components of this solera style wine. Nice long finish. Hits the 'A' mark for me. And amazing QPR!

Thick burnt caramel color with a viscousity that makes motor oil look delicate. Made from dried grapes the nose of this is full of dried fruits from raisens to prunes to peach or nectarine. Soft nuts and caramel, along with very light wood polish all fill in around the fruits in the nose of this wine. In the mouth this wine sits thick on the palate though what makes me so excited is that fact that there is a ton of acidity helping to keep this wine fresh and alive in the mouth. The finish, well, I started this note on Saturday night and come Monday morning it's still lingering. As far as the flavors, think caramel, honey, molasses(light), myriad nuts, carrmelized peachs...all of this combined with notes of cinnamon, anise and cloves. The first time I had this it was one of the first PX's for me. Now that I've had many others, this one still is damn close to perfect! alt=5

Deep and dark with a light red glint. Brown sugar, molasses, light cinnamon spice and a wisp of wood all show on the nose. The palate is thick and viscous with a medium acidity that doesn't fully balance out the intense sweetness. The flavors get lost in the viscousity showing mainly carel and molasses, though with time dried dates and light cinnamon came to the forefront. alt-3.5

Amber-gold towards brown in colour. Big nose of golden raisins, orange, toffee, molasses with slight rancio edge. Tasted of figs and golden raisins, soaked in espresso... orange, caramel, earthy. Very sweet, with lots of zip (acidity, and considerable -- but balanced -- alcohol). Very very long finish was suprisingly bright (apricot, orange, raisin). Excellent (Liquer-like; can't imagine wanting more than an ounce at a sitting)

A very pale, slightly greenish straw. Light, slightly fragrant nose with sherry notes, but much lighter and more fragrant than most fino/amontillado sherries. Very lightly flavoured. Clean attack - quite light but fills enormously. Very rich, but also very dry. Cleans up nicely on the finish.
(31/12/00)
A couple of days later: possibly a little deeper straw colour, but there's still that greenish tinge. Attractive, fruity dry sherry nose with smoky, tropical fruit, a light fragrance and some briny-ness. Nice fresh attack. Clean and fruity and light. Very full on the middle, and very dry. Incredible length. Very clean after. Very Good Indeed/Excellent.

The youngest PX I've had. Super thick and heavy. The fruit is more delicate than I expected, given the viscosity of the wine - I think it is thus a bit out of balance. Older Alvear soleras show much more intensity of fruit and caramel and nuts and ... so much more. Still, this is a beautiful wine, and paired with blue cheese it was excellent.
