2010 Fattoria Galardi Terra di Lavoro

Slow oxed for an hour then enjoyed a glass over 45 minutes. Typical Terra de Lavoro flavors of dark fruits, plums and tobacco with an undercurrent of the volcanic terroir's dry, rustic character. While great, this didn't quite rise to the level of expectations given the reviews for this vintage. My guess is that it needed more air time and would have benefited from better glassware and a more elevated environment.

Notes from PNP - saved 1/2 bottle for retaste tonight. Black/red color with no apparent sediment. On nose, iron, ash, black cherry and tobacco. Medium+ body, medium+ acidity, integrated tannins and long finish. Palate flavor profile consistent with nose. This bottle was not as complex as prior tasters notes suggested but maybe it needed a decant - still a very nice wine.. 92-93 range.

This is now open and singing, at least after a 45 min decant. Still quite a lot of structure and tannins of course but also beautiful dark fruit, nice complexity with some spice and nailpolish. Medium lenght to the slightly smoky finish.

Inky purple, with a complex nose: ripe black caps, cracked walnuts, hints of mint and lilac. Dry and richly flavored with the fruit ripe yet not at all overripe, soft tannins and a tart long finish that seems very saline and tactile.

Wow...so good at 20-years old. Dusty blueberry, red cherry, and dark plums. Mostly secondary notes of volcanic soil, earth, pencil lead, leather, and minerals. If you like this style of wine, you'll love this...as I do. Still has some nice acidity and long finish. Great wine right now.

Note from second night. Dark and ripe in colour. Earthy, smokey, with notes of iodine and treacle, dark plum and currant fruit. Palate is full bodied, ripe, smoothish tannins, decent aciidity, but finishes a little short. Given the hype - disappoininting, but pretty tasty and decent value.

Decanted an hour before dinner. Initially tight with the ashy character others have noted framing recalcitrant fruit, but blossoms within 30 minutes and continues to improve over two hours. The palette here is unrelentingly red to red-black, but with so many layers that you don’t miss the absence of a cooling blue. Increasingly velvety and rich with air, but never loses its focus. Delicious, and probably eternal; if you open it now, give it time.

Much like 5 years ago. Lots of tannin and smoke with a bit of black fruit, all working together. Still going strong.

Drunk for dinner with cheeses. 13%. Deep garnet. Intense nose of Bramble fruits, smoked bacon, leather, autumn soil after rain and iron filings. Deeply complex and perfectly balanced. Benefitted from lots of air and still great after 4 weeks in opened bottle - so no rush. Just lovely.

From Magnum.
Gave a too strong decant and the wine completely faded.
Opened 30min before drinking, it had decent fruits but structure was still a tight (maybe 91 at the time).
I decide to put in decanter but at the end we only start drinking 2h later and the wine completely flatten (fruits/tannins mostly gone) 85 at the time.
Just PnP and let it open in the bottle.
In this case, it is a decent wine. I wouldn't rate higher as although tannins and fruits were nicely done, there is not much in tertiary and considering how fast it faded I don't see any upside potential for further ageeing.

In a really nice spot right now. Day 1 - decanted for about an hour. Nicely balanced acidity and tannin. Warm fruit. Humming. Day 2 - held together. A bit drier. Just a nice, even Italian red. Nothing pronounced and nothing understated.

Dark color, dirty aroma, like drinking from an old boot. I've tasted at least ten of these bottles over the years and they've been uniformly disappointing. This was a sip and pour... down the drain. Hope it's my last bottle.

2017 Fattoria Galardi Piedirosso Terra di Rosso Campania IGT

The debut vintage of this label: 100% Piedirosso. Fermented and aged in new French oak barrels for 8 months. 14% alcohol.

Dense, almost fully opaque blackish-red color. The nose feels ripe, sweet and dense with moderately oak-driven aromas of juicy black cherries and elderberry juice, some dried dark fruits, light vanilla tones, a little bit of toasty mocha oak and sweet hints of Christmas spices and mulled wine. The wine feels dense, polished and somewhat sweet-toned on the palate with a full body and intense flavors of ripe black cherries, some dried dark fruits, a little bit of vanilla, light bilberry and elderberry tones, a sweet hint of cloves and other Christmas spices and a touch of stony minerality. The overall feel is very firm and tightly-knit, thanks to the high acidity and quite assertive, moderately grippy tannins. The finish is grippy yet rich, polished and silky with a long, somewhat sweet-toned aftertaste of juicy black cherries, some oaky notes of cloves and vanilla, a little bit of elderberry juice, light toasty notes of mocha oak, a hint of bilberry juice and a touch of dried dark fruits.

I was surprised how this wine turned out to be surprisingly youthful and surprisingly evolved both at the same time. The overall feel is definitely youthful: the tannins are still very stern and unresolved, the ripe fruit is pretty in-your-face and the very obvious oak influence has not integrated with the fruit one little bit. However, there is also a savory, somewhat evolved dried-fruit note that lingers in the background all the time, lending a bit developed feel to the wine. I wonder if it is because of the age or because of the vintage (which was pretty hot and dry in most parts of Italy)? While an impressive wine in its own right, I felt the wine was somewhat too polished, modern and oaky for my taste - if I wanted to taste a varietal Piedirosso, I'd love to taste how the variety actually tastes like - not along with tons of sweet and toasty notes of extracted oak spice! I think there is rather little sense of place or varietal character here and I really hope age would help the wine gain better sense of balance - at least it feels like this wine is built to age.

At Evvia. Very polished silky and rather international tasting. Great depth of fruit but not a lot of secondary notes. Not overtly sweet but comes across jammier than I am used to in Italian reds. There is no denying this is tasty and will appeal to everyone

Grabbed the wrong vintage of this one and had it decanted before I looked carefully. Our liking of this wine is unchanged, but now I find it a bit boring. Based upon other sources, it is a blend of Aglianico – Piedirosso. This produces a very dark (gloomy is the producer notes) and mineral laced wine. It takes quite a while for this wine to mature and become drinkable. The end result is a wine with a noticeable dark red and black fruit character that has nice mouthfeel. This bottle lasted several evenings with evening meals.

This is a dense, dark, somewhat forbidding wine, but with two hours in the decanter, it was completely drinkable. Strong licorice flavor upfront, resolving into black currant and then tar on the aftertaste. Great balance -- perfect as an accompaniment to strong-flavored food. Very consistent experience across three bottles over the last two years, though I think the licorice flavor is becoming more pronounced.

My final bottle of this vintage and it was from a magnum. It was opened, but not decanted, for an hour before pouring. I brought this to an Italian restaurant with my wine group. We all loved it, but those of us who have had the Galardi before all felt it tasted much younger than we expected a 2008 to taste like. Maybe it was the magnum effect? Full bodied, with notes of tar (in a good way), dark dark fruits and a long finish. Just beginging to show some nice spice notes. I thought I picked up a hint of cinnamon on the palate.

Mixed Italians (Terra Rossa, N1): The nose is everything you hope for from a quality Aglianico: deep, rich and leathery with notes of dried tobacco, bonfire, tar and contained, concentrated dark fruit. It feels really young to me on the palate and the structure is quite intimidating, though I'm not sure this is ever going to be an inviting wine with smooth, resolved tannins.

Tasted over two days, alongside the same vintage Trotanoy and Léoville-Barton.

The words bouquet and perfume cannot adequately convey this wine's olfactory expressiveness. Floral and fruit notes (live, fresh, dried, and essences) linger in the background, behind root vegetables (raw, sauteed, roasted), live and dry herbs, assorted olives, tobacco (all forms), umami, smokehouse, all things savory (kelp, iodine), ash, minerals, and ores.

The wine tastes like it smells, in inflection changing waves. Bold, concentrated, and precise. Without any sense of the contrived fruitiness, heavy timber, and nasal membrane destroying alcohol that characterize the modern style. Medium plus acid and medium tannins frame the substance beautifully. Indescribable sophistication and nuance! Neither Bordeaux could match this wine's range and depth.

All elements point to another decade+ of life. Satisfying in all regards. Stupendous QPR! 97-98.
