A deep, dark and penetrating wine. Smoky, tarry and black of fruit flavour. Some leather, sage and ironstone too. Full and fleshy, possessing waves of flavour. Large scaled but light on its feet. Chewy finish and supreme length. Still very fresh under screwcap.

Alex's TWS dinner (Noizé, London): Deep dark red. The intense purity is striking, as is the quality and sweetness of the fruit. It's incredibly tasty, with lashings of sophisticated black cherry and cassis that are as smooth as the proverbial. Far too easy to drink even at this late stage of the evening. It's funny, on the face of it this seems to have many of the same elements as the Faugeres but somehow this just works better as a package. Excellent.

Pale ruby-violet , transparent, clear. Slightly subdued nose of dusty fennel seed, iodine. Bright acid, medium plus intensity of flavours with very sweet, almost liqueured purple fruit, mulberries, rosy-raspberry jam of Turkish Delight and dark chocolate finish. Fine sand-paper tannins, long finish, very well balanced. Delicious wine, easy to drink, with excellent structure - nothing is out off place. Very happy to have some more in the cellar.

Fine, rich, perfumed, elegant, wonderful balance. Medium weight. Exquisitely perfumed. Rich, balanced, wonderful complexity & elegance. Amazing at 16 years. Even better with time.

2019 Single Vineyard dinner
Fine, rich, perfumed, elegant. The contrast with the Mt Edelstone is stark. The intense, inky expression of the year is there, but it's so overwhelmed by the extraordinary finesse, perfumed complexity, balance and elegance. As with all truly great wines, it's balanced from Day 1 and will likely be until it fades. Drinkable now but better not looked at for 15 years.

Inky. Very intense, yet soft. Should progress. Began to open up in the glass.

Strong, clear shiraz, sage and rosemary. An inky character that it shares with the Mt Edelstone. Round, some austerity. How will it age?
Not for me.

Fruity nose with cassis, black berries, dark chocolate, eucalyptus, vanilla, tar, charc.
Medium+ body, cassis, eucalyptus, tar, charc, cedar, soft tannins, medium++ acidity, long fresh aftertaste.
Should still keep for at least another 5-10 years 🍷🍷🍷

I had this at a casual dinner so no formal notes but this was in a lovely place, with a very elegant, classic Eden Valley fruit profile with plush tannins and good freshness remaining. Totally drinkable now, it may still improve slightly but should at any rate hold for quite a few years to come.

Tasted after 2021 Tappa Pass and 2013 Mount Edelstone and the quality jump is immediately noticeable. Ripe blackberry aromas rise out of the glass. Blackberry, plum and cherry on the palate with vanilla and a hint of licorice. It's a concentrated, powerful wine with a big, plush mouthfeel. I'd very happily drink a lot of this if I could afford it.

Jammy nose speaks of the hot 2013 vintage and the palate has the similar slightly stewed quality. Fruit rather indistinct too. Ho-hum.
Not objectively bad but quite a disappointment given the label. Tasted alongside new release 2021 Tappa Pass which made this seem a bit pedestrian.

The cool 2021 vintage is showing here as in the glass this resembles Pinot or Grenache more than Aussie Shiraz Cab both in colour and in body.
Mix of sweet and tart red and black fruit, some pepper and herbal freshness. Lovely and elegant. Potential to score higher but I only got a small tasting pour so couldn't dwell on it, would have liked more!

Big floral nose with sweet honeysuckle and lime is a misdirection and the palate is mouthpuckeringly bone dry. Flinty mineral and lime juice. Almost hard to drink at the moment with that searing acid but I think it's got a great future.

Deep ruby with garnet edges suggesting some maturity. The aromas unfold with a bounty of stewed fruits: sweet jam, damson, cassis and blueberries. Intense and rather inviting, a touch of menthol adds a refreshing edge - classic Oz. Subtle hints of spice, vanilla, red flowers and a whisper of orange peel add complexity and appeal.
A sweet entry with ripe expressive flavours borders on jammy, with Jube fruit, damson plum, and dark (70%) chocolate. The tannins are thick and fibrous, while a menthol coolness persists through the mid-palate. This is a very approachable wine with expansive richness, culminating in a lingering finish. 65 Shiraz, 20 CS 10 Merlot, 5 CF

Bob's cellar. Dark red, no bricking at all. Blackberry, damson, red earth and ironstone nose, sweet and still has a youthful air. Eucalyptus and tannic opening, still dry, fruit is reticent on PnP basis. Powerful and big compared to the Latour, certainly not the same level of sophistication. Rich and spicy.
Day 2, knitted together better, the eucalyptus, ironstone, red earth and Australian bush is more distinct. Nice but I prefer the Edelstone.

Bottles donated from the Henschke cellars. Complex aromatics of wild sage and other herbs, smoke, cassis, blueberry and violets. The palate is supple and accessible, yet so deep and detailed. It has wonderful texture and build and the finish fans out and closes with fruit and menthol.
